Those are my 2 choices for my children. Which is the lesser evil? Amalgam or composite? I’ve heard about the dangers of mercury, but also about the dangers of BPA. I’m so worried! Please help! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have both in my mouth. My boys each have 1 or 2 fillings, but I'm not sure what they have, as their fillings are in the back. My dentist tries to use the teeth colored fillings if she thinks the filling will be visible.

The mercury levels in fillings are so low as to be insignificant. Also, studies are now showing that BPA is actually quite harmless in the levels that we had been receiving before the scare and that the replacements for BPA are not any safer (or more dangerous) than BPA. So pretty much, it was much to do about nothing.

Fillings are incredibly safe. If you have specific concerns, ask your dentist. He/she should be able to answer any questions you might have.

Overall, I think you just have to live your life, realize that not everything is perfect. The materials used for fillings are not perfect, but they are about 1000 times better than not getting cavities filled. And it's just not worth living your life in fear.

The problems with mercury are well documented and at this point, it's shocking that amalgam fillings haven't been banned. The BPA concern is valid too though. Have you asked your dentist whether or not the resin that they use in composite fillings has BPA? Not all resins do. You are more likely to find BPA-free composite resins at a biological dentist so if it's something you'll worry about and you can find a dentist near you who doesn't use resins with BPA, that might give you peace of mind.

What does your dentist suggest? Are you seeing a pediatric dentist?

Personally, we did not have to deal with fillings or any orthodontics for our daughter, fortunately. However, if we were faced with any decisions, I would have relied on the advice of my dentist.

I understand you have fears, educate yourself on each material and then decide. Is it really worth not taking care of the teeth for the fear of the unknown later with a particular material?

This sounds like someone who refuses an xray due to "too much radiation" when you get radiation daily when you walk outside the house! Don't let fear ruin your life.

My kids insurance plan covers mercury but not amalgam. So they have those.
I try not to worry about it, it it was as big of an issue as people make it to be they would stop letting it be an option.

I suggest you research both, keeping in mind that not all comments on both of them are based on specific scientific research specifically to those substances used as fillings. I've also noticed that things once considered unhealthy are now considered to be OK.

My generation and previous generations only had the fillings containing mercury. My parents, aunts and uncles lived into their 80's and 90's without issues related to fillings

Sorry, neither. While I’m not a biological dentist I am a holistic nutritionist so I am familiar with this. The BPA can leach into the body just as the mercury does. Ask for BPA free or call around and ask other dentists. Do a search for a biological dentist in your area. If you do end up using the bpa composite, make sure your kids are eating a Whole Foods diet and support their liver, immune and gut health so that the burden is less and detox pathways are doing their job. Kids today are already so overburdened with stress, toxins, our processed food, chemicals everywhere etc...
