Mega Blocks or Lego?

which one do you collect and do you have both? My husband wants to get Lego sets for upcoming birthdays, but we already inherited 3 or 4mega blocks sets. Since they are not compatible, and I know my style is not really organized, seems I'll have to get rid of one to have the other to keep from going crazy keeping them separate. How does it work in your house? I was ready to just commit to collecting a few mega blocks since thats what we got started on.

to clarify, I'm not talking about Duplo brand of Legos (large Legos for toddlers). Mega blocks is the knock- off of Lego.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Cool Sadie. The Lego employee told me they were not comparable. Liar!

I didn't realize they are not comparable. Just a knock off. Have you tried to put them together. I going to my son's room now and will report back.

They work together. I can read 'lego' on the bump and 'mega bloks' on the brick. They connect as if they are the same brand. This is an example of the mega books, since it seems many think they are for toddlers and they also have a 'call of duty' and 'Halo' ine that I do not use. http://www.toywiz.com/trueheroefire.html?utm_medium=pla&a...

edit: Mega Bloks hurt my fingers. Lego sets do not hurt as much and seem to be easier to put together for kids.

Mega blocks are a waste of money, Legos all the way.

Lego pieces resell for a much higher price. That's why most people buy them over any other brand.

My husband buys Legos on clearance and separates the set. He sells the individual figures and makes over double what he paid. Some of the more collectible pieces go for a lot more.

I have 2 Legos fanatics at my house. In our experience Mega Blocks suck, they just don't work very well. They can be very hard to get together and sometimes won't stay together. I think it is a quality thing. Legos are more expensive and they don't offer the sets like Halo but they are the higher quality product. Higher quality = less frustration and more fun for the builder.

Mine outgrew mega blocks at a pretty early age and at 11 and 7 love legos. It depends on the ages of your kiddos. Mega blocks are for the younger toddlers that haven't developed fine motor skills for the smaller legos.
ETA: sorry, when I think of Mega Bloks I always think of the big ones for toddlers and assumed that's what you were talking about. I still say go with legos.

My 12 yr old still LOVES Legos and wants to keep them for his kids! Thank God, because they are not cheap.

We ditched Megablocks and bought Duplo. Be aware ... Lego no longer makes the Duplo train track; it's only available after market and is typically hugely marked up (ask me how I know ...). So, if your kiddo loves Thomas or other trains, I suggest Megablocks for that, as they have Thomas now. But, other than that, Duplo or Lego all the way.

My kids have both, so I know Mega Bloks and Lego are compatible other than some special pieces. Mega Bloks has the licencing for some brands/characters my that Lego doesn't have and vice versa, so if your kids like things from both you'll probably end up with a mix eventually.

Time for Lego!
They just have a lot more variety.
Our son still loves them and he's 16 now.

Legos in this house :)

We have a couple of sets from the Mega Blocks (like a big truck type thing with a crane) but otherwise Legos. One my kids were about 8 the Legos really took off. Then there's all the Harry Potter, Ninjago, etc. sets they can get into.

Lego is one of the few toys of theirs that I am really glad we invested in. They get hours and hours of entertainment from them. I ended up buying some just basic block sets too so that they could create their own creations (and not just the sets).

We have tried many different bucket and tub types - currently (best one we've had yet) is a low under-the-bed type storage rollaway (wheels) low flat long tub. They can sit on either side and just sift through it easily and thankfully it fits under the couch we have in rec room.

The little figures are really popular with my kids - not sure Megablocks has those? Possibly. And the sets get put on display in their rooms - which is fun. Except for dusting...

We have all of those, my boys are now 5 and 7. They still build with all of them, the tiny legos are their favorites but they'll still incorporate the bigger ones in different ways. I just keep them all in separate bins. The large mega blocks all go in a large clear plastic bin, they're a cinch to separate and pick up. The duplo legos take up less space and go in a medium size clear plastic bin. The tiny legos all go on the lego table, our lego table was once our train table. If I want them to sort and separate the legos they can do it too.

Lego, Mega blocks are cheaper, but have a more limited selection. Lego will grow with your son, possibly through into adulthood (especially if he is into building).
