Hi B., I personally have known a few people on Medifast, but they switched to Herbalife due to the cost and the great health and weight loss results they received. Herbalife meals are approximately $2.50 per meal or $5 a day. I don't think any plan has that type of cost associated with it. I personally lost 34 lbs. in 6 weeks, so if that is fast enough...I'd be glad to share the Herbalife product with me. (Even better...I've gained great health results while losing weight!). You can call me: ###-###-#### or go to my website to learn more: www.derweightlossmall.com.

I was on Medfast for a full year! It was hard at first but then it gets really easy and does work. The hardest part is larning how to eat food when you are done. Maintanence is harder with a fast but you can do it. I recommend it.

It's great and works well if you follow it.
I lost 30 pounds in a month and felt great.
The first 5 days are hard, just like anything but after that your appetite goes away.
It's not expensive if you order on-line. I never went to their store.
My doctor said it is a great diet. You lose fat not muscle on this diet because it puts you into ketosis.
Your breath will be very bad so stock up on mints!!
My doctor said to stay on it only 3 months at a time. I am going to go back on it but it's just getting to that point!
Good Luck!! It's an easy diet!

Hello, I have heard too many testimonials about the serious side effects of this plan. One friend will never be the same about her colon health and another had a heart attack. It is not safe!
Also, I read some of the responses and you cannot lose fat without losong muscle at the same time. Excersise helps with any weight loss plan to help keep muscle tone and lose weight.
Nothing about a liquid diet is safe... you need frest fruits and vegs and lots of fiber to fell satisfied and to keep your colon healthy.
Try Weight Watchers and go to all the meetings. It works!

I hate this stuff! I couldnt stand it for one single day. I have 3 friends that did it long term and lost a lot of weight but 2 of them have gained it all back as soon as they stopped and the other is up and down and onto the next diet. Good luck.

It works great for losing weight fast if you're disciplined with it, but it doesn't develop new eating habits for you. So when you are done with it, all the weight comes back with friends if you don't make a lifestyle change - which if you did, would lose the weight slowly over time anyway.

Hi. I read all of the responses first because I wanted to see how people reacted to Medifast. I read that some people gained back all the weight they lost and some couldn't afford it. I wanted to suggest you research another alternative. The weight can come off quickly with this too. It is nutritionally balanced and lets you eat one "normal" meal a day. No blood tests or Dr. monitoring are required. I'm not sure how the cost compares, but you also have an option to find ways to pay for the weight loss products. For those that are looking for the 'Diet for those who Can't do diets'... www.cinchplan.com/recipeforhealth.
Oh yeah, "Not only am I the president, I am also a member!" HA HA I used it and went from a size 14 in July to a size 10 by Sept.

OMG!!!!! IT WORKS! IT WORKS!!! IT WORKS!!! I know a half dozen very close friends who are currently on it. They've lost anywhere from 20# to 40#'s to 30 #'s to 25 #'s to 15#'s...........SO MUCH WEIGHT lost. They were all about 40-50 lbs. over weight. I am about 30 lbs. over weight & would love to try it but I can't afford it right now. My sister gave me a week of food but don't want to use it b/c you really need to commit to this for a long period of time. I have read ALL the books & brochures about it & believe in the process. It takes several days for your body to adjust & then once your goal is reached, you have to go on a maintaince program. They have numerous seminars you can attend for FREE! You also have counselors to call at any time to help you. I highly recommend it. My sister has been a larger size than me for over 15 yrs. & now I think she is finally smaller. PMO. Ha ha. Good luck. Would love to hear back from you if you try it. J.

My experience (and that of research on folks that keep the weight off long term) is that the most effective way is to not view the dietary changes as a short term diet. The most effective approach is permanent dietary changes (the basics of good nutrition (lots of fresh veggies, some fresh fruit and healthy protein and healthy fats. The amount of carbs and grains highly variable depending upon your metabolism/body type)

This diet may be good as a kickstart and motivator to lose a larger amount of weight at first (you don't mention a goal and the amount you want to lose relative to what is a "healthy" weight for you makes a big difference as far as how much weight you can lose and how long it would take to get to your "healthy" weight. NOte, that I say "Healthy" weight as we are all different and unfortuantely, in our culture what some folks think is a desireable weight for them may not be healthy. For example, I'm at a very healthy weight right now, but would love to be 10 lbs lighter. Realistically, this isn't logical and indeed if I were 10 lbs lighter, my health might be at risk - body fat is important in maintaining normal hormonal balance.

Also, in my experience, it can take years after the birth of a child for your body to fully recover and for it to be reasonable to get back the figure that you had prior to motherhood. For me, it took 7 years for my hips to get back to pre-childbirth size - our hips do expand as the cartilage loosens to allow that baby to get out!

I know this is lots more info than you wanted. But, this is such a common question on Mamasource. I was a chubby child and tried every diet available at that time for 15 years - 12 to 27. It wasn't until I made permanent dietary changes (removing virtually processed carbs and foods) that I've reached a weight that fluctuates +/- 5 pounds for the most part. I get more strict with myself (eliminating carbs and increasing exercise) when I start moving above that +5 lbs.

I've followed this approach now for 20 years and am basically the same size as I was at 27, which was about 15 lbs lighter than I ever was at 17. I can wear jeans that I wore when I was 16. I keep a pair around for motivation when I "feel" fat. Unfortunately, the self-confidence of women is just so impacted by how we "feel" we look.

One of the most important aspects for me was to find an exercise that I really, really enjoy. I cycle 3-5 times a week (and have for 20 years, even while pregnant) and I walk my dogs every nite for 30 minutes. This has a tremendous impact on how I feel each and every day. Given that you have two girls, I think modeling this behavior is so, so very important.

Also, I don't eat dramatically different than my kids - I have the same protein and veggies with dinner. I just give them a starchy side dish (rice, potatoes or rice pasta). I also don't eat their snacks (a good habit for me is buying their snacks in single servings as much as possible - it limits how much I might have when I just feel I want a "treat").

My husband's side of the family are all overweight - some even obese. We can see that my younger son has those same genes, so we do talk about him likely needing to be very careful about his diet and making sure that he exercises enough (that's no problem for him at age 13, but could well be at 23, which is when his dad really put on the weight. Also, diabetes runs in my husband's family (as well as depression). These things are all connected and all highly impacted by long time lifestyle choices and decisions.

And, again, as well as your losing weight by making the right choices, you will do a wonderful job of preparing your daughters to have a positive self image and dramatically increase their health in a positive manner.

Good luck.

Hi, B.. Yes, I tried Medifast two years ago; lost 37 pounds and have successfully maintained my weight. Medifast is essentially a very low carb diet, which you could do yourself by carefully monitoring your carb intake. Should you choose to order their products, I would recommend selecting specific items from their website store, rather than ordering their "packaged sets" of food items, as there are bound to be items that will not appeal to you. The chili is great, their soups are fantastic and so are their meal replacement bars. Getting accustomed to drinking a meal rather than chewing was difficult for me, but as I saw the weight coming off, I dealt with the fact I couldn't eat what I wanted. For me, it was worth every penny. I lost my weight over a three month period. Hope this helps. By the way, I started the program when I saw the amount of weight a co-worker was losing while on a similar program conducted by UCLA. However, she was required to meet with a counselor weekly and needed to purchase her food from their "store." She spent a fortune for the same results I achieved with Medifast.

I am not on Medifast but my parents are. My mom has been on it for about 2 weeks and has lost 6 lbs and my dad has lost 12 lbs. Men lose faster than woman. I know she told me that it is about $75 a week to buy their stuff. I am not sure what the sighn up fee is. They have to meet with someone once a week and weigh in and I know that they required them to have blood work done. You have their soups, bars and shacks during the day and have a low fat and low sodium dinner at night. They seem to like it, but they sure do miss being able to eat regular food. I started the atkins diet again last tuesday and have lost 11 lbs up to today. I probably would have lost more if I would not have cheated Sat. and Sunday night. Hope this helps you out and if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask. Good luck!

My husband and I are both on Medifast. Our doctor recommends it to her patients wanting to lose weight, although not as a diet, but as a lifestyle change. Combined with exercise, it is a great, healthy, and safe way to lose weight, if done appropriately. I would highly recommend talking it over with your doctor first and not just trying to do it on your own. Our doctor holds monthly "support group" meetings for those of us on the plan, and that really helps out a lot. It is expensive, but if you stick to it, and then stick to eating healthy when you transition to the maintenance phase, you will keep the weight off.

I have not tried Medifast myself, but my doctor tells me that losing that much weight that fast is not healthy and not realistic. I was on a fasting diet many years ago that caused me to lose weight, but because I lost it so fast my body didn't have time to adjust to my new weight and the weight came right back on...and then some.

This time, I used NutriSystem. I don't know how much Medifast costs but I've heard it's expensive. With NutriSystem all you pay for is the food and most of it is pretty yummy and doesn't cost any more than a Lean Cuisine frozen dinner...usually less. There are a few things on their menu that I don't like and I just don't order those items. If I'm invited to a restaurant with friends or family I eat the restaurant food...just watch portions and fat content. I still have my favorite glass of wine on the weekends. I needed a diet that was easy...no weighing, measuring or counting calories. No weekly trips to get weighed-in. No feeling deprived. After being on NutriSystem since June I have lost 20 lbs., which my doc tells me is a much healthier transition. In fact, he told me that the longer it takes to lose the weight the more likely you are to keep it off. Not only that, but over the past four months I look at food differently...I think about food differently. I no longer eat for pleasure, rather, I eat for health and nutrition. I listen to my body and when I begin to feel hungry I eat and stop before I'm full. I eat about 5 small meals a day and I drink about 2 liters of water a day. I also exercise about 3 or 4 times per week. I've lost all cravings for deep fried foods and with NutriSystem I can still have chocolate, pizza and burgers. I'm now in my maintenance phase and am still eating some NutriSystem foods combined with my own meals. I NEVER feel deprived on NutriSystem.

You have to find something that will work for you. Not all weight loss programs are created equal and people aren't either. Find a program that you know you'll be able to stick with for the long run. Oh, and be sure to ask your doctor. It's important for your doc to know that you're on a weight loss program so that he/she can monitor your health.

Best of luck to you. Don't give up. It can be done. All it takes is patience and determination. I keep pics on my mirror and fridge of me when I was thinner to keep me motivated. You will see the light at the end of the tunnel before you know it.

B., I have done Medifast and had good results. However, at the time I could easily afford it, was being closely monitored by my doctor and was highly motivated. It is not an ideal solution for long term weight control and is like any other diet in that regard. If you return to old eating habits you will regain the weight. Sad but true. I have battled weight nearly all my adult life and know what a hard road it can be. After years of trying nearly every diet food/plan that came on the market I have finally found a solution for me. Everyone is different so it is imperative to find out what works for you personally and that includes financially, emotionally and do-ability as well as physically. I wish you all the best!!!!

I have not personally tried it, but a very good friend is on it currently and she has lost 46 lbs. She uses a off-brand, I'm not really sure of the name. She also says that you have to be disicpled about it. She and one of her co-workers are doing it together and the co-worker is not getting the samme results. Anyway, if you want more detail, PM me though the link below.
