I just found out my 4 yr old niece whom was BORN with just ONE kidney..took a cat scan and they cant find her ONE kidney? Looking for people who have had this happen to them or there child?
So, you are saying the KNEW she only had one kidney and now that ONE kidney is missing? Not showing up during medical testing? Where did it go, or rather what do they think happened? Is it able to move a bit, like a pendulum and hid behind some other organ?
That is a terrible thing for her to be going through? Are they trying to find a kidney for her? Is she going to be okay?
Please give us more information and how she's doing!
My 4 year old daughter only has one kidney. The docs noticed when I was pregnant that both her kidneys had cysts on them. When she was born, they did an ultrasound and her right kidney had stopped growing. Had another ultrasound when she was 3 months and her right kidney some how re-absorbed itself (where it went I have no idea, the docs told me about this). So now, she only has the left. We see a nepherologist every 6 months to do ultrasounds, blood and urine checks. She is doing great. She has been in gymnastics, soccer, t-ball and is very active. The doc said bicycles were the leading cause of kidney trauma in children because they can flip over the handle bars, so we are careful on bikes. Other than that, everything is great. Your niece should still be able to have a normal healthy life.
My son was born with 2 kidneys but only one works. The bad one is full of cysts and has no function at all. He is completely healthy, and has been in the 90-97% for height and weight his entire life, so just having one kidney has not slowed him down. He has to see a pediatric nephrologist every 4-6 months to monitor the growth of his bad kidney, and he has to have ultrasounds and bloodwork done at that time too. He can do anything except play contact sports, but I didn't want him playing those anyways! People can live normal, healthy and long lives with just one kidney.
My child has only one - they found it during a prenatal ultrasound. It turns out about 10% of the population has only one kidney, but you'd never know unless they do a scan for it, or as for your niece (and is very common), a scan for something completely unrelated. The one kidney grows to be larger to compensate. These people live very healthy lives - they just need to take care of that one kidney. Stay hydrated, don't play intense contact sports (downhill skiing and cycling are the only ones actually prohibited), etc. She will be fine.
My cousin has just one kidney but they didn't find out until he was 20 years old and he was having some other problems. It shouldn't be a problem as long as your niece eats well, etc. and has it checked out regularly.
