I am meeting my husband in Maui after his business trip to Oahu. I have been to Maui once and we did Road to Hana already and some other stops. What hot spots would you recommend..what restaurants? Thanks for your input. We are not going luxurious this time around...kinda roughing it and seeing the sites.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you fellow mamas for your input and well wishes. Yes, roughing it was not the right verbage for a trip in paradise. Just meant we are not doing the all inclusive type resort route. More of an exploration trip on our own. I do feel so blessed to have opportunities to go alone with my hubby on trips...wish I could pack you all in my luggage!!

We put Mama's Fish House on our list for sure. And, we do love the little Mom and Pop diners..they are the best! Thanks for the reminder about Costco...such a good tip! We plan to grab snorkel gear when we arrive and stop off all along our trip at beaches that catch our eye. Haleakala for a sunset dinner is on our to do list...along with the Lavender Farm.(Hubby not so thrilled about that one but I will make it up to him somehow...wink..wink!!) We plan to take in alot of beach time..nap on the beach...read on the beach...and plenty of love making!!

Now just have to get working on that Corona commercial beach body...that will be the hardest part!!! Thanks again ladies for your input...you are all so sweet!

Go on a nice dinner cruise out of Lahaina. Go to a Luau. We did a luau on Maui right in Lahaina too. Just rent a car and go drive. Its gorgeous.

I'm an unrepentant bum. I can and have spent months doing nothing more than swimming, surfing, having sex, and reading books. Since I have a child at home (aka almost never get to do that these days)... that would be *my* itinerary. Granted, doing so usually leads to meeting people and little 'explores' (their house for dinner, sailing, meeting for lunch, whatever). But I would (and am) perfectly happy with simple self indulgence and 'see what happens'.

What would I do alone with my husband in Maui?
Maybe I shouldn't answer that.
:)
I've never been there, but I know people that go often and they say some of the out of the way restaurants and things are the best. The little Mom and Pop types of places for food give you the best for your money.

I hope you get some great responses. Have a great time!
I hope I get to go someday.

Best wishes.

Go to see Warren & Annabelle's Magic Show in Lahaina. I know it sounds like a strange thing to go to in Hawaii, but it's so much fun! It was recommend to us and we went reluctantly, but it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. Just be sure to get tickets early because it often sells out.

The best snorkling (i think) and its free is at Honolu'a and Kapalua Bay. One of my favorite beaches is Big beach/Makena and if your up to it there is a nude beach on the other side. As for food, Mamas is the best but pricy. Definatley shave ice is a must! Colleens in Haiku is delicious. The Swap meet someone mentioned is the best! Anyway that is my two cents! Have fun!

mamas fish house it to die for!! Maybe a snorkling trip? Lahaina is a great town to wonder around and take in the sights. Can't remember the name of it but there is a volcano you can go up and watch the sunrise on. Or, since your don't have your kids just lay around the pool/beach and be lazy. Im so jealous, have a blast.

Some things I would recommend doing in Maui on a budget would be.....
-Stay at the Maui Coast Hotel in Kihei (its on the warm, dry side of the island walking distance from really nice beaches and from restaurants.) The hotel is inexpensive (by Maui standards) and has a nice pool with good food. I like to spend my first two days on island there; to adjust to the time difference by laying in the sun and really relaxing into being on vacation.
-A cheap Kihei restaurant is Alexander's (Ono fish and chips....mmmmm)
-A drive to the top of Haleakala crater for sunset is nice (especially in the first few days there when you wake up really early from the time difference.)
-If you follow the road past Wailea (near Kihei) all the way to the end, you end up in La Peruse (sp?). Early morning snorkels here amongst the black lava often involves dolphins. Then lunch at one of the beachfront resorts in Wailea on the drive back. (The Grand Wailea or the Kea Lani are both pretty decadent)
Then, if you drive the Hana Highway again , you start off in Paia. The beaches aren't so nice on this side, but the food is wonderful! There's a great pizza place called Flatbread and next door is organic local made gelato, at a place called Ono. There's also a great health food store, Mana in Paia.
-Hiking in Iao Valley is quite beautiful.
Enjoy your travels! Hope these suggestions were helpful. Aloha!

If you fly into Kahului, remember that there's a Costco near the airport so that you can stock up on snacks or drinks before you get to your hotel.

I second Mama's Fish House! It's a splurge, but so romantic and beautiful and the food is amazing! So worth it!

The Trilogy cruise to Lanai is also a splurge but a fun way to enjoy the day!

For things that don't cost much, enjoy the beautiful beaches and snorkeling - dive shops have the snorkel spot maps. Pick up a pizza one night at pizza hut and have your own little sunset picnic on the beach. I know that there are lots of great hikes too, though I don't know them off hand, it's been a while since we've been there!

In Whaler's Village, it's fun to also sit at Hula Grill in their barefoot bar area, and enjoy the music or hula dancers they sometimes have. The Hula Pie at Leilani's is fantastic! Roy's is always a good choice for dinner, but more on the pricey side.

Have a wonderful trip! Sounds amazing to go to Maui with just your husband!

Lahania has some good shopping and restaurants. LOVED the Luau there.

We also loved going out on a whale watch... it was awesome and the whales are beautiful, however, I don't think they are around this time of year... They are usually there in Feb/March.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy!
