Mattress Pad

I've been reading a lot about the benefits of getting an organic crib mattress and I did that...now I am wondering about the mattress pad. What should I be looking for in order to keep my baby safe? Right now, I have a 100% cotton one from Buy Buy Baby, however, it does have the plastic below it to make it waterproof. Is that OK or should I be trying to find something else? Thank you.

I'm not going to tell you what you "should" be buying, because that is a matter of your own level of comfort, and your reasons for going organic. My family chose to go no-plastic with ours, but we do almost everything organic and unbleached, including cloth diapers. If you decide you don't mind the plastic, of course it is OK.

We chose the Naturepedic brand, and it works very well. It is just as waterproof as any plastic, and we love it. It does add to the price considerably, but it's a great product.

I think if the plastic is polyurethane laminate (PUL), then it should be pretty safe. Vinyl (pvc) is the one to look out for. I don't think you should worry too much. The vast majority of babies don't get all natural bedding, mine didn't, I just couldn't afford the price of an all natural mattress.
