I went to the doctor last week and my doctor felt a mass of something around my pelvic area, I look 5 months pregnant and I am not pregnant. I've had the mirena in me since Nov/07. I feel so bloated all the time, and little nausea at night. I am waiting for the results to come back from the ultrasound exam. Should I be relly concerned? Anyone having similar problems with the mirena? Hopefully it's nothing. Fibroids? cysyt in my ovary?

What can I do next?

It sounds like to me you may be having either ovarian cysts or fibroids, both of what I've had. Fibroids usually don't require surgery and can shrink on their own over time unless there is severe pain and bleeding. Ovarian cysts may require surgery, though as they don't shrink and may even swell up even further and they may be either benign or malignant, which the ultrasound won't be able to identify. Both are completely unrelated to the IUD (which I've never had). Both are very common occurances, but you should get your doctor to give you the official findings from the ultrasound within the week.

K. I'm a OB/Gyn and you probably have fibroids which can grow to be quite large. An ovarian cyst can do that too but would cause more pain. Fibroids are benign muscle tumors which can cause bleeding, pain, cramps, heavy flow or bloating sensation. The sono will give you the answer, just be patient and wait. Let me know if you have any more info or questions

Sounds like you have a cyst in your abdomen. The nausea is probably the weight/pressure from the cyst lying on the vagal nerve when you lay on your back. Does the nausea dissipate when roll to your side to sleep? Probably unrelated to your IUD. Just sounds like a cyst. They can remove it and

I am a little concerened that you have had your mirena in sice 2007. My doctors have all said every 5 years it should be taken out and a new one inserted.

I had 2 ovarian cysts that burst on their own(the pain was intense and lasted about 3 hrs). I also had fibriods that were so bad I had to have a hysterectomy. grapefruit sized and growing outside my uterus as well pushing up against my stomach- intense pain if I ate too much. Did not eat at all the first two days of my period. I looked into a hysterectomy about 2 yers before I did it and the Dr. recommended against it. When I started with another Dr, I inquired again and he said I was the perfect candidate-best thing I ever did!!!! I wished I had not waited but there are other ways to remove fibriods, so if you are still planning to have children and you find out its fibriods seek out the alternitives.
Best of Luck!

Hi K.,
I went to the doctor a few weeks ago, because I've been having a lot of pain in my pelvic area. The past few months its gotten a lot worse. I had the Mirena IUD put in May 08. Doctor did an ultrasound and found a small cyst on my ovary. I went this past Friday for a more detailed ultrasound and am waiting for results. The technician didn't say much but I have multiple cysts but he said they were normal size. I don't know- if this is IUD related or not?

Please check this out. It talks about the down played side effects of the mirena. Whenever you introduce a foreign object in your body, there are potential risks.
