Marker Removal

Hello:

My very eager and active 3 year old decided it would be fun to use an Expo dry erase marker on our couch cushions. I can not get it off. I used our carpet cleaner, nail polish remover, and shaving cream to no avail.

Please help me, we just had our furniture cleaned and I would love to remove this big red mark from our off white couch.

What can I do next?

Don't you love all these 'hints from Helouise' answers? :)

Here's another option or 2:

Try baby wipes, they have gotten marker off of my kids hands and faces before with baby wipes. I even had marker on my hardwood floor thanks to my little artist and it came out with a wipe.

Or try the "magic eraser" from Mr. Clean.

Good luck!

Aren't those fun? lol

Try oxyclean. There is an oxyclean pet stain removal out there that I happen to have on hand from when we had a dog that I've used on carpet stains (nothing more fun than when your kid pukes up carrots on white carpet in an apartment!) and on dirt stains on a used couch we bought. You could probably get the powder stuff and try that since I believe it has directions on it to mix it for a paste or liquid for stains not on clothes that you can launder or on furniture. oxyclean has also taken big red soda out of khakis for me before.. after sitting in the trunk of my car for 6 months (I was in highschool.. lol) in a Texas spring/summer/fall.

Try rubbing alcohol or hand santizer. It may make the ink bleed so blot do not rub.

Hi L.,

Not sure if you already had a response to this or not, but doing daycare and having 3 kids of my own...I run into problems like these a lot. Try hairspray! I was able to get black permanent marker off my very light beige couches with just using hairspray and rubbing. Good luck! Let me know if you tried it or if it works!

Try soft scrub or baby wipes. Maybe even magic eraser, I haven't tried it on furniture before.

Hey L.,

I had the same thing happen to me about a month ago! My little 2 year old artist decided to take the marker off the paper!!! AAAAGGGGHHHH! Anyway, I used Solumel from Melaleuca. It is the best cleaner I have ever used! I use it on countertops, stains(laundry too), I have used it concentrated to get nailpolish out of my carpet, in my humidifier, and you can also use it safely in bathwater! Tons of uses. I also have used the Prespot on my furniture with great results...it works great on Koolaid stains, why not furniture??? It worked too! If you have questions about Melaleuca just send me a quick email to: ____@____.com

I had a 3 inch diameter ink spot on my couch cushion, and marker all over another. I used the Purel hand sanatizer and it took all of them out. It took some time and a few applications but it worked. I just rubbed a little on the spot, let it sit on there for a few minutes, and then blotted with a paper towel. Afer repeating a few times, it took all of them out.

try tooth paste, it works on walls and bathroom tile so maybeit will work on the cushions.

It's horrible stuff... I had to throw away an outfit of my daughters because it didn't come up. Hopefully you can take the cover off the cushion. I did a search of the internet and this looks the most promising for you:

Step1-Rinse the stain under cool running water until the water runs completely clear.

Step 2-Place a paper towel under the stained area of the fabric.

Step 3-Soak the area with isopropyl alcohol using a cotton ball.

Step 4-Replace the paper towel as the stain is pushed out onto it by blotting with the cotton ball.

Step 5-Launder the fabric in hottest water possible with bleach or color safe bleach and dry as usual.

Good luck. Dry Erase is great for white boards but not for fabric!

Hi L., I would try Sol-u-Mel from Melaleuca. I wonder if rubbing alcohol would work. Nice to meet another family that had their first child after having been married a while. We were married almost 18 years when we had our son.
Blessings,
S.

If you get the stain out - I'd recommend getting your couch a slipcover until your kids are old enough not to color on the couch. I have many stains on mine and have come to realize I can't have anything nice until my kids are grown :). I am in the process of finding one to cover my off white couch for the next couple of years. Just a suggestion
