Try doing something fun with him that he would love & is not something you would normally do. For example, for my husband's bday we are going to go & get archery lessons. For my last bday we went out and got sport clay shooting lessons. (These are things we've both wanted to do, but for some reason never did before.)
Other ideas: a charter fishing trip (if you live near the shore), skiing trip, a hike in the woods (if the weather's nice), rock climbing at an indoor rock gym. I think there is a place in PA where you can get race car driving lessons. Its one day & its expensive, but at the end of the day the guy would get to drive a race car around the track.
Good luck.

Pack his bags and kidnap him from work on Friday. Take him away on a surprise getaway.. Look at Cheap tickets.com or look for last minute trips online.

My husband is much better in the romance department than I am.

Is he freaking out about turning 40?

Is there any way you can re-create one of your most romantic moments? Perhaps your first date, a special occasion such as your engagement?

My husband would just be happy with some romance - that would be his perfect birthday present.
Good luck!

How about booking an overnite at a Bed and Breakfast. Or just a nice hotel not too far from where you live. Have dinner reservations at a fav type of food resturaunt.

If he likes flying lessons they're only 60 dollars, you could also if you're comfortable with your body take classy racey photos, also maybe book him a suprise get away with the guys, maybe paintballing or fishing, whatever he's into, maybe a treasure hunt through the town, go to his favorite stores and have the person at the counter ready to give the mini gift (coffee at starbucks, deserts, music...) and give the next clue and lead to a romantic dinner for the two of you, i have more if you'd like my email can be reached through my site www.4pakids.com I also have date night ideas on it

Anything special that you plan for him - a concert, a weekend away, a tour of a brewery, a visit to a museum that he would enjoy (the sports museum in Pittsburgh is one that fans from that city love, but what is his preference - you're within driving distance of the Hall of Fame for football and for baseball). Just find something that you can do together and that you both can enjoy, the romance will follow ;)

I set up a surprise golf weekend for my husband on his 40th. He LOVED it. His best friend (and his wife) and me and my hubby, and kids with each couple made a weekend of it. The guys had their golf outing and we took the kids to the beach/park to play while they were golfing. After, we all hung out, went out for dinner together, stayed up playing cards etc. It was a lot of fun for ALL of us. My husband says it was by far, his best birthday present ever. If your husband isn't a golfer, maybe you could do the same concept only with whatever it is he enjoys... fishing, hunting, whatever... I personally would avoid the too too romantic stuff. He is a GUY. Let him not feel guilty for doing his favorite thing and he will LOVE you all the more for it! It's his birthday, it should be all about HIM. :)

Hope this helps!
