Mammogram Results

I had my 2nd annual mammogram (first at this facility) yesterday. The first time I had one the facility gave me my results before I left. At this new facility, they don't have radiologists in house but said they're pretty quick (within 3 days) of getting results to dr.s office. I just moved here and have not yet established with an OBGYN so I had the results sent to a general dr that I have established with. My question is, who calls me if there is an issue? Also, I had my baseline mammogram from last year sent to the new facility for comparison. The new facility mentioned that they would wait one week for the mammogram information from last year to arrive before sending it to my drs office. Now Im concerned that if my test yesterday was abnormal they would wait a week to let me know. Very, very frustrated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the comments! I appreciate all of your views and experiences. I'm not generally an anxious person but I do have high anxiety when it comes to a mammogram. Maybe it's because I just started having them or perhaps is the mere fact that I'm being checked for cancer. Don't get me wrong, I want to know if I have it but it does cause anxiety. So, thank you Sherry for understanding that:) And, still no results.

If your test is abnormal, I don't think them waiting a week (2 or 3 more days) to let you know would make a difference. You have no reason to believe your results will be abnormal, so stop worrying over nothing.

However, I have a story to share with you. Since this is your 2nd mammogram, I am assuming you are 41, which means your results can come back saying "normal, but you have dense breast tissue." That is what happened to me (I am 42). My doctor said it is very normal to have dense breast tissue in your 40's, and not to worry. I did research and learned that dense breast tissue shows up white, and so does a tumor, so how do you see white on white? You don't! I was upset that my result came back as "normal," when, in my opinion, it should have said, "inconclusive - further testing is needed." So I demanded further testing and had a breast MRI. Glad I did, b/c something came back as "abnormal" (they said it could be nothing, but something is on my left breast that they want to check out). So I have an appointment for an ultrasound next week. Good luck!

I would follow up with the office to see if the baseline mammogram has arrived. If not, I'd call the facility it was being sent from and tell them they have not sent it yet. This is a lot of leg work for you, but if you want your results in a timely manner, you can't assume there is an sense of urgency at the other end - often there is not. You have to call to make sure they are sending what they need to and that it has been received. And ask the questions of the facilities. Sadly, the squeaky wheel gets greased. You want your results in a timely manner, you have to expedite the process, that often runs slower than molasses in the winter.

Since this was a routine mammogram, I really don't understand your anxiety. Chances are in your favor everything is fine. Try to relax.

FYI...I have several fluid filled cyst so my results are always abnormal. Therefore my doctor sends me for a mammogram and ultrasound on the same day.

I do understand your anxiety. Usually a letter will be sent out within a couple days. If there is a problem they will call you. I can tell you that if there is an issue they won't wait a week to call you.

It sounds like the new place doesn't have your info from last year. When your info arrives, they will send it, along with this year's, to yor doctor. If it's not at their location in one week, they will just go ahead and send this years info to your doc without last years. Is that not how you heard them?

Why would you think last year's exam showed abnormal results? Your GYN at the time should have talked to you and probably ordered a second mammo if that were the case.

I wouldn't be concerned about an abnormal result from last year.

I usually get a letter in the mail within a week letting me know the results we're normal. I did have to have a second mammo the first time around, but I've heard that's actually very common.

Stop worrying! No good can come from it.

ETA - Sorry, I read part of your post wrong. If there is something in this year's mammo that is abnormal, it is very likely that it will be noticed without a comparison to the baseline. They will want to talk to you as soon as they know anything, but Momof3 is right, waiting a day or two isn't going to hurt you. Try yo relax and think about other things.

I do understand the anxiety. I had to have one b/c I had a lump and it seemed like an eternity to wait for the results.

Does this clinic have an option of an online "chart". I get the test results faster Online - usually a couple days earlier than the paper results.

But I would call your doctor and just let them know you're anxious and waiting for the results. You're not the first and you won't be the last. Eventhough its a routine screening, many people get anxious about it
