Making the Best Choice for My Son

I am looking into putting my son into Kindergarden this coming 2008 fall. He will be 5 years old. I am interested in any and all advice you have on schools in the Downey, CA area or the El Segundo/Hawthorne area. I am interested in good academics, strong religious (or "now we really shouldn't hit") attitude, well rounded (offering extracurricular?) education. Possibly some arts like music and art. I am interested in being involved in his education. I can work for the school. I can volunteer (would prefer pay). I have no teaching credentials...but, may be able to get some. I can work in a cafeteria or simply be the bothersome mother that calls and checks on her son. From what I understand there is a highly motivated school in the western portion of Hawthorne that has huge parental involvement and good grading results. Thank you, in advance for your opinions.

HI P.-
I'm not sure why your choices are Downey or El Segundo, perhaps your husband works in one place, and you live in another? Whichever, the most important thing you can do to decide where to send your little genius (none of us are biased ;-))is to VISIT lots of schools.

A great place to start is greatschools.net You can easily compare scores, parent ratings and facts about schools there. Then, you should call the schools directly (and soon) to find out when their Kindergarten Tea's are being held (most are this month!) Go see at least three schools - and see them each twice. The first time you see them should be an open house or Tea (when they expect you) and one surprise visit (when they don't).

I am the president of the education foundation in Westchester/Playa del Rey (wpef.org) - so, I can tell you volumes about schools just north of El Segundo. We started our foundation when the founders' kids were all in preschool and have been uber-volunteers ever since. So, once you've decided where to send your 5 year old - being involved is the best way to make sure that the school succeeds, that your child has a great school experience and perhaps most importantly that you can model for your child how important education and "giving back" are to you.

Good luck!

Look at the California Department of Education site for info on schools. If you want private schools, look into some of the OC ones too such as Page and Fremont. Downey has good public schools- not sure about Hawthorne. Long Beach Unified has some great schools in the area close to the University. I am a teacher and my advice is that to look at a school as a whole- not just API or AYP scores. Look for a school that the teachers are not sooooo stressed about the scores and still have time to nurture your child!
