Magazines for Preteen/teen Girls...

A couple of months ago, someone asked this question & I loved the responses & wrote down & researched several magazines that I planned on ordering for my girls for the Holidays & their birthdays coming up....of course, I hid the sticky note so my girls couldn't find it, as they use my office sometimes, too. I've spent hours searching for the note & the "Request & Responses" column & still couldn't find it... I'm especially interested in the one that was about fashion & I think it had paper dolls for teens to design clothes for. I really wanted an alternative to "Cosmo Girl", which is what my 12 year old thinks is SO wonderful & wants, but it scares me!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the info, Ladies!! I've ordered American Girl, Discovery Girl, New Moon & the one I was really looking for, Kiki! That's the one I think my 12 yr old, who is into fashion, will enjoy the most- I hope- but at her age it's hard to tell! It seems like a lot of mags, but I have 3 girls + all their Girl Scout buds, hanging out here, so these mags will get a LOT of reading! Thanks a bunch.

Hi V., I've heard that New Moon Girls is a great preteen girls' magazine. My friend has a 9 and 12 year old and they both are really pleased with this publication. I don't know how much of it is fashion related though...You can find it at www.newmoon.com This is from their homepage: "Safe. Educational. Advertising-Free. Girls ages 8 to 12 develop their full potential through self-discovery, creativity, and community in an environment designed to build self-esteem and promote positive body image in the important tween years."

American Girl is a great magazine for your preteen girl. While many of the teen magazines might not be appropriate for younger girls, American Girl is age appropriate and features articles about issues that affect the 7-12 age group. It provides advice, crafts, and games, as well as fashion tips, interviews with celebrities, and more. American Girl provides all the things preteen girls look for in a magazine. Much of the content is provided by the readers so it not only provides an opportunity to see that other girls have the same experiences, but also allows girls to try out their writing skills and possibly have the thrill of seeing their name in print.

Discovery Girls is another magazine geared toward the ages 7 to 12 set. Discovery Girls provides a platform for girls to express their ideas and voice their fears. With articles on school issues, inspiring stories about girls, sports, fashion and more, most preteen girls love Discovery Girls magazine and read it cover to cover. Parents like the magazine because of its great content that's appropriate for preteen girls along with its limited advertising. Discovery Girls is a nice magazine for girls who are beginning to focus on body image to see normal girls just like them in a national magazine.

The American Girl Magazines are really nice and age appropriate. They have a section how to create hip outfits using what you have at home or getting a few items to update your wardrobe.

I've also heard nice things about New Moon Magazine though I have never read one.

The Klutz company has a couple of products on Fashion Design that are a big hit in my house. There are three that I know of My Style Studio, Paper Fashions, and Paper Fashions Fancy. One was a gift from another pre-teen and has filled many, many hours in my daughter's bedroom. Another will be filling her time after the holidays when she'll be getting it as a gift. I saw them all at Borders Books and at Barnes and Noble.

I want to commend you on encouraging your girls to be girls and not little adults. There are so many influences trying to get our daughters to grow up too fast and losing the sweet time of childhood. Good luck in keeping the process at bay.

Girl's Life is a kind of like Cosmo Girl, but less, how shall I say, trashy? I ordered it for my 10 year old niece. I suppose by the time she's 12, she might be more interested in Cosmo Girl, but I picked one up at a doctor's office, and was very surprised by the adult content. More appropriate for teens 15 and up.

What about Teen Vogue? I think there is less boy-related material, and more fashion...

Try "American Girl." All 3 of my daughters have loved it.

"Girls Life" is good, too.

My daughter loves the American Girl magazine, and it is completely acceptable. I would stay away from the teen celebrity magazines...

Two things...

First, I would be wary of the Cosmo Girl and Teen Vogue because I think that they're too mature for a lot of the teenagers (too much sex and boy stuff!) There are a lot of great suggestions already Girl's Life and American Girl!

Second thing, I started using the "Save this to My Files" button that appears under "What can I do next?" when I find things that I like and it saves them for me--no more post its to lose! :)

Good luck!
