Hello all. My 4yr old son has a painful soft rather large lump uner his left armpit. I went to lift him up yesterday and he said "mommy that hurts" so I lifted his shirt and there was that lump (soft to the touch) but my son wont even let me go near it. I made a doctors appointment but its not till tomorrow. Any idea or similar situations outhere??? I just worry and 1 whole day seems like forever to me.

Thank you

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well my nanny thinks its from an infected finger which she believes the lump is a reaction and he may need antibiotics for the finger. he has a low fever but seems his lil cut got infected so I place an emergency call to his doc and told them I am coming today. LOL I just cant wait till morning. Will keep you posted and thank you all, you have made me feel a lil at ease

It could also be a swollen lympnode. They can be tender. They can happen for what we think of as "no reason." Normally when lympnodes swell it's because they're fighting something (like a virus). Sometimes they swell for no reason.

And remember, 1 day won't be the difference between life and death. It's likely nothing serious, and if it is, you didn't wait weeks to see if it would go away, you're taking care of it as quickly as you noticed it.

I get that when my body is fighting off being sick. It's a swollen lymph node. It's happened for as long as I can remember.
Generally when I get that, I don't actually get sick. Kinda like my body won the battle.
It usually goes away after about a week.

Sounds like a swollen lymph node that's fighting an infection.
Seeing the doctor is good, but it's nothing to worry about.

I know what you are thinking here - cancer. It is good it is soft though. I have always been told cancer is hard. There are lymph nodes in the armpits (all over the body actually). He may be sick or that one lymph node could even be infected all by itself. While I think it does need medical attention, and it is a cause for concern, don't beat yourself up over it too bad yet. I know, I know.... much harder said than done. I am a worrier too, so I really don't practice what I am preaching to you! lol I pray it is something as simple as we mentioned, and I really do think it will be.

Manda is right, lymph nodes are in that area. They can get enlarged when the body is fighting some sort of infection. I would go ahead with the docs appointment, but don't be surprised if he just shrugs it off.

Hope he feels better soon!

Hopefully it's just a cyst like my SD had. It was painful to remove (I won't kid you) but it was benign.

It's totally a swollen lymph node. That, paired with a fever, is a strong indication that your kiddo needs to see the doc and get a prescription for an antibiotic. He'll feel better in 2-4 days tops!

Probably a little infected cyst. Or a lymph node. Easy to clear up. Nothing to worry about.

I got a very painful lump in my armpit and was so scared about it being serious that my doctor sent me for a mammogram and other tests.
It turned out the lump was from an absessed tooth. The infection had settled in one of the nodes in my armpit.
After a root canal and a series of antibiotics, the lump went away and never returned.
It is possible for infection to do this.

Just try to keep him comfortable for tonight, don't mess with the bump and see what the doctor says tomorrow. Don't worry yourself sick over it.

Best wishes.

As you can see, people have varying opinions and none of them will tell you what's going on with your son, only being examined by a doctor will tell you that. While it's hard not to worry, there is nothing that you can do about it til you see the doctor. Hearing other peoples' stories won't tell you what the lump on your son is.
