Low Progesterone Count

I have a history of multiple miscarriages and have been trying to conceive baby #2 for a while now. Our first misscarriage was in August 04, a blighted Ovum which ended in a D&C. We got pregnant 3 months later and our healthy, amazing son was the result! We might have had another miscarriage Spring 07 (late period, no positive pregnancy test but a VERY heavy period with horrible cramps), we had a confirmed one in August 07 and I am pregnant again (5 weeks). I recently switched OBGYNs as the last practice didn't do any tests and it was quite frustrating. My progesterone levels are very low again, which is what happened in August. The New doctor's are already being proactive and putting my on supllemental progesterone today. I so want this pregnancy and am trying to stay positive. Has anyone had any experience with low progesterone and supplemental progesterone? Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your positive posts and feedback. I appreciate. It does seem however, as though I am miscarring again, for the 4th time. I hope this doctor is more proactive so that this is the last one!

I've taken natural progesterone before because I have an estrogen dominanace (make too much) and I swear it participated in me getting pregnant. I tried to get pregnant off & on for a few years. I took high levels of folic acid and used the natural progesterone cream and BAM, within 3 months I got pregnant. I was told the progesterone cream would help thicken my uterine lining.
The "father" of the natural progesterone concept was Dr. John Lee M.D. His website is http://www.johnleemd.com/
I have found a lot of very valuable information from his research!!! It's amazing what your Dr's don't tell you!
Good luck and many blessings throughout your pregnancy. I KNOW how scary it is to fear a miscarriage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My first pregnancy I had a very low count, but didn't know it until I saw a new doctor 6 months into my pregnancy(mynew doc was shocked I was not put on a supplement)--this only reassured me on my decision to leave the other practice....so, again for my 2nd baby my progesterone was low and I was started on a supplement for the first trimester. I didn't have any of the side effects or anything and shoudl I get pregnant again, I would assume I'd have to go thru the same thing again. they'll probably check your levels a few more times in hte beginning. Good luck...it sounds like you are in good hands.

Hi D.,

I had 2 miscarriages and was told I had low progesterone and so I did some research. I put myself on a natural progesterone cream and by the 2nd month I'd conceived. I stayed on the cream for most of the pregnancy and now I have a healthy 6 month old. This is my 4th child and I had no trouble with the other pregnancies. I would suggest you do some research. I was put on the oral progesterone with my 2nd pregnancy that ended in miscarriage and later found out that it is not the best because it is absorbed into the blood's water cells, whereas it needs to be absorbed into the blood's fat cells and as we all know, water and fat don't mix. Therefore you need to take mega doses of oral progesterone because as much as 80 or 90% is processed out (through the kidneys or liver, I forget which.) A progesterone cream that is absorbed transdermally is much more effective, but make sure that it is bioidentical and not synthetic. A synthetic progesterone supplement is HORRIBLE for you and could actually have adverse effects. You definately want something that is USP bioidentical. USP stands for United States Pharmacopoeia which is the international standard of purity for substances used in the manufacture of drugs and cosmetics. In the case of progesterone, USP simply confirms that the progesterone is the identical molecule as is produced by the human body. The title progesterone USP, identifies the progesterone as natural and differentiates it from the synthetic versions which are often referred to as progestins or progestogens. I used Progestacare by Life-flo and was very pleased with the results. I bought it at Fruitful Yield. I was charting my cycles to utilize the most fertile time of my cycle and that is how I knew when to use the cream. You use it everyday from the time you ovulate until the time your temp falls (this is the time your body would normally be producing the progesterone on it's own, in order to support a fertilized egg.) If your temp remains high after the 18th day, you're pregnant and DON'T STOP USING IT! If you do it could cause a miscarriage. Use it at least until the end of the 1st tri-mester, but longer is okay too. If your temp drops (usually around the 12 day) you can expect your period and then when it comes, your stop using the cream until the next ovulation time. Bonus, it helps with PMS, perimenopause and menopause symptoms as well. Hope this helps!

Hi D.,

I took progesterone supplements with two of my four pregnancies due to a miscarriage after baby #2. I couldn't wait to get off of it after the first trimester b/c it made me a little loopy and tired but it was DEFINITELY worth it! I have two more beautiful babes to show for it!

I am not sure how many people responed but I had the same problem with my daughter. I was also put on progesterone and it worked. I had to stay on it until three months. then i had to go off it because at that time it does not matter. I was so low my doctor told me i was going to loss the baby over the weekend and what I should expect it worked. I liked that I was on it. Good luck

Yes, I was in the same position. At 5 weeks pregnant, I was having HORRIBLE cramping and my OB did a progesterone test. It was a 7 instead of 25. I was on Crinone for the rest of the first trimester. When I went off of it, the cramping returned in one day (I wanted to try natural progesterone at about 10 wks). So, I was back on it within 3 days and the cramping stopped for the rest of the time I was on it. My daughter is now almost 16 mths and just perfect. Absolutely no side effects from teh Crinone. Stay positive. You are doing a great thing for you and your baby, and probably once you hit 14 wks, the placenta will be strong enough to take over making the P. Until then, just relax and go with it. If you have any more questions about P, PM me.

Congrats!

My husband and I did fertility treatments and as a precaution I was put on vaginal progesterone supositories. The month I used those I conceived my twin girls (due in April 2008). They are a little messy, but the supository puts the progesterone right where it needs to be - in the uterus. Good luck!
