Low Milk Supply - Brighton,CO

I've had trouble with low milk supply ever since my baby was born by unplanned C-section last March. She's been nursed almost exclusively, on demand, though I've had to supplement with formula now and then to keep up with her needs because her weight gain got off to a slow start. I've been using an electric breast pump as well, trying to get my supply up, and I've tried goat's rue, More Milk Plus, Mother's Milk Tea, and a couple of other herbal blends. I've tried adding fiber to my diet, eating oatmeal, drinking extra fluids, anything I've heard about that might help. It's gotten to the point where my baby is consistently wanting more milk than I can produce for her now, and I'm just wondering if I've missed anything I should be doing. If I can't get my supply up soon, I'll have to start supplementing regularly with formula, and I really was hoping I wouldn't need to do that.

Thanks.

I had the same problem as you and I had my doctor prescribe me Reglan and my God did it ever help. It was wonderful. While pumping I went from getting barely 2 ounces from both breasts together to getting between 8-11 after starting the medicine. A lot of people haven't heard of/tried this approach but for me it was one of the few options I had. It has side effects but mine were minimal and only for the first couple days. All I experienced was tiredness. I'd ask your doctor. There are also generic brands of Reglan that also work. I really hope this helps and that your doctor can help you out. Good luck and let us know what happens:)

you can try fenugreek and blessed thistle herbs. although you have to take about 3 capsule 3x per day(which is more than the bottle suggests. i think brewer's yeast is supposed to help too. you can also talk to your doc about reglan, a prescription that helps with milk supply but it has some side effects. also try a suplemental nurser and check out kellymom.com there is a ton of help on that site. and make sure you are using a really good pump when you do pump. best of luck, i had nursing problems too and it really is stressful

Congratulation on your new daughter! BF babies eat twice as often as formula babies and also do not gain weight as fast. If your daughter is eating every two hours, this is normal. When you pump how much are you getting? I don't think it is a good idea to be switching back and forth from bottle to breast at this age. The sucking is different with breast and bottle, so she might have nibble confusion. She might not be sucking right to get enough milk from you. I think you really need to make sure she is latched on correctly and nurse her more instead of pumping.

Also, if you are getting stressed out about nursing, it could be effecting your supply. Try to relax and put your feet up while you nurse. I found it comforting to lie down and nurse. It also gave me a chance to rest. Drink plenty of water and eat.

I went through the same thing so I had to go more on formula, however I heard from many people now that they drank a root beer and now the flow doesn't stop. I hope this helps and gl.

First of all i would have to ask if you have talked to your doc about this yet? Also how often does your baby want to eat? Breast milk goes through a baby much faster then formula so if your baby wants to eat every 2 hours then that is pretty normal for a young breastfeed baby. I remember days when my daughter would nurse evey 1/2 an hour to every hour. (I always had lots of milk but some days she would nurse all day) As she got older she would go longer between feedings. Also the best way to get your milk supply up is to nusre like crazy. Pumping will get milk out but it doesn't stimulate the breast like the baby does. I would offer your breast to your baby as much as you can for a few days to see if that can get things going. And if you haven't talk to your doc.
