How old is your mattress? If it's more than eight years old, it's probably time for a new one. My husband and I were both having back pain and it finally occurred to me that maybe it was our mattress. Sure enough, got a new one and within a week my back was better.

My son had a very bad middle back ache around a rib 3 yrs ago.
He had slipped a rib out of place. It hurt like crazy and sometimes it was hard for him to get a full breath of air.
Chripractor adjusted the back and ribs in 3 visits and he's been good ever since.

Have you seen a chiropractor or checked into yoga? I have pain everywhere, I was a pretty serious dancer for many many years and broke several bones growing up (just a big clutz without a choreographed dance) so I have arthritis and on occasionally my muscles just contract yoga helps me street out the muscles and the chiropractor (when I have time and $) helps because the years of dance has caused my backwards c (that's how your neck bones should look in an x-ray) is straight up and down to be slightly moved back into place. Also with the yoga, you'll learn meditation and that's the best pain management I have ever found. Mind over matter. Good luck! Constant pain sucks, but we're women! We can handle anything right?

Sounds like it could be muscular - try having a couple of massages to work out the muscles. Warm baths too would help. Omega III Salmon Oil is a natural anti-inflammatory.

What's your posture at work? Do you have a desk job and tend to slouch alot? Or are you on your feet all day?

I had trouble like that at one of my jobs. I was slouching in my chair and slowly strained my lower back. I fixed my bad habit and the pain went away. It also helps if you do exercises focused on this area. Strengthening the back muscles does a world of help for back pain.

If you are on your feet all day look into a back brace. They have thin ones you can wear under your clothes.

Hope you feel better soon!!!

I read and totally agree with all the answers you have received so far. The only thing I could add to the list would be a physical therapist. I had a similar situation, just a little lower in my back, around my kidney and spent over a year having various tests done before someone was finally able to figure out the root of my problem. It was the PT who eventually diagnosed my issue, which was in fact, muscular and skeletal. I basically had to retrain my muscles and learn how to sit, walk, lift and sleep the right way. After a combination of physical therapy, chiropractics and pilates, I'm a new woman. Most importantly, when the pain starts to come back, I've been taught exactly what stretches and exercises to do to alleviate the pain. Good luck!

Go to the Chiropractor, you probably have a rib out of place. It might hurt when he adjusts it, and take a couple visits but you should be fine afterwards. My husband is a Chiro and he sees this all the time.
