Looking to Buy a Breast Pump.

With my daughter it was cheaper and easier to rent a breast pump. This time around I am finding that prices have greatly changed for rentals and I am going to have to look for a pump to buy. I am trying to decide between the Medela Pump in Style Advanced pump and the AVENT ISIS iQ DUO Electronic Breast Pump. I do plan on using the Avent bottles, and I am used to a hosptial grade pump with strong suction. With my daughter strong suction didn't seem to bother me. I would love opinions on these 2 machines, pros and cons and would love it if someone has tried both. Thanks so much for your help!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much everyone for your great advice. I spoke with a LC in the area and she recommended the Medela PIS as well. So, we are going to give it a try. She said with what I plan to use it for it should be a good fit. Now it is time to find the best price :)

With my first, I also rented a hospital-grade pump - but due to breastfeeding difficulties was pumping a LOT more than I am now. For my second child (born 5 weeks ago) - I also came to the realization that it's cheaper for me to buy a pump - i got the medela pump in style - and I love it. It doesn't seem much different that the hospital pump I was using 2 1/2 years ago! The lactation consultant at the hospital recommended it the pump in style.

For me, I had no luck with any pump except a rental I rented from a lactation consultant group. (Not through a hospital; I found my hospital's LC group to be mean and not helpful!) This was less than 2 years ago, and I thought it was affordable, esp. considering how well it worked. Maybe you can shop around? Or maybe someone will offer you a pump rental on a sliding scale?

If you get a Medela pump and you don't like it, contact me. I know they are expensive and non-returnable, but Medela was great with helping me with that and I'll fill you in.

Good luck with your new little bundle en route! :)

T.,

Hi! I have used the Medela Pump in Style Advanced for eight months, and I am nursing twins. I love it. Both sides are completely expressed within 10-15 minutes. My supply did diminish when I went back to work and had to pump for two of their feedings, but this is expected when you pump. Overall, I am very happy with my pump.

Good luck to you!

I recommend Medela and so does the La Leche League. There are more options with this pump. All the women I know have used Medela and I know most hospitals do too. I loved mine, both the electric and manual.

Hi T.,

I have a Medela Pump N Style that I used for both of my daughters...with one I had to pump exclusively for 6 weeks during the course of my breastfeeding and my second daughter was breastfed for 14 months (95% of the time on the breast). Needless to say, I used the pump a lot (especially when I went back to work). I absolutely loved my Pump N' Style and plan to, hopefully, use it again. I would highly recommend it to anyone. They make it so small now, in terms of packaging. The suction is completely adjustable and very strong (I don't think I even used the strongest setting because it was too strong for me). Hope this helps. Best of luck to you and your family!

It depends on the purpose of the pump. If you plan on exclusively pumping neither one of these are designed to establish milk supply and/or maintain full supply. If you are looking for a "now and then" pump either would be fine - but as mentioned the PIS has more options. You may find that being a stay at home mom this go around you don't need to pump much, or at all excpet for occasional circumstances. If you run into big problems at the begining - you'd be best off with a hospital grade pump for the short term and seeking help to work through the problems at hand.

I am on my 4th breastfed babie and my 3rd pump. Medula...was and is expensived and I had two go out on me. So I researched and researched the best pump. I found out about this one from leleche- they would know the best. Medula just has the market saturated... The bailey has two diffrent pumps are hospital grade. I love it much better than the medula....it looks just as nice with all the perks of icepack and bottles. PBA free...I found out why the medulas break is that milk can go back into the motor. This one it can't. Hope this helps. Oh I only paid $160

I have the Medela PIS. I have no probelms, and there is a conversion kit that you can order and pump directly into the avent bottles. My sone is 10 months old, 2 month left. Yes, my milk went down a little since being back at work, but they also need less milk as time goes by.

I have not used the Avent ISIS.
You might want to check with the LC in your area to see what they recomend as well.
Good luck & Congratulations.

I swore by the Medela pump in style. It was a bit pricey but well worth it... I was able to nurse/pump until my son was 11 months old despite teaching full time.

Me personally~AVENT all the way!!!! Have used it for 4 babies & if I could, I would be a spokes person for them!!! Love the pump!!!!! Was easy to pump on one side as I was nursing on the other to help with having milk on hand in the freezer or whatever....LOVE IT!!! & I meant it that I would jump at the chance to be a spokesperson!!!

I LOVE the Medela, it is fast and efficient. A bit pricey.. but totally worth it. I can pump both sides in 10 minutes. They have great accessories too. I have a couple of friends who are using the brand new Medela pump that is hands-free, which they love, but it costs quite a bit more..

I used the Medela PIS and I hated it (it HURT like the devil!). Then I heard about Whittlestone, and got one of those. LOVED IT! FYI, I bought/sold both pumps on Ebay. Don't let anyone tell you it's not sanitary, etc. to buy a used pump. No milk ever touches ANYTHING on the pump that can't be washed. Also, remember that your nipples aren't sterilized before your baby latches on to nurse...

Good Luck w/the new baby!
