Looking into Having a Nanny for Infant Twins

I am expecting twins early this fall, and also have a 2 year old who has been attending child care. He didn't start going to child care until he was about 6 mos old, but I was able to stay home during that time. I won't be staying home full-time that long this time around, so we're looking into child care options. We'd like to look into hiring a nanny to stay at our home with the twins while I start back at work slowly after a few months off. We still need to look at the costs of a nanny for 2 babies versus the cost to send them to our center. Plus, I have reservations about the merits of having a nanny versus having the babies at child care. While I'm concerned about relying on one person to care for our 2 babies by herself (without the oversight of other teachers, directors, etc), I'm also reluctant to put very young babies in a child care center. I would be working part-time after a few months, and then back to full-time (which is very flexible, and I can work at home some days). My 2-yr old son would continue going to his child care center, as he's very comfortable and happy here. Does anyone have any leads or suggestions on finding a nanny, such as agencies you may have worked with, how you went about choosing one, how it worked out for you once you hired someone, etc. Also, what might I expect in terms of cost?

What can I do next?

I know that they advertise sittercity.com on this website. They have everything from nannies to just hourly babysitters. They have pricing and references. It might be worth looking into.

I have a few friends who have full time nannies and they pay 500-600 a week. One friend went through college nannies and I had another who went through craigslist and did her own background check and reference calls.

K.,
We were very fortunate to always have family watch our two daughters while we worked (we both work full time) for several years. When our oldest was almost 4 and our youngest was 8 months, that was no longer an option for us. I started looking into daycares, but not excited about having to send the girls somewhere all day. My husband suggested hiring a nanny...I laughed and said, yeah, right. I really didn't think that was an option, financially. We got online and started searching. There are several nanny agencies, but most charge $1000 - $1500 for placing a nanny with your family. We found several nanny websites though where you just pay a certain amount, usually $50- $150 or so to post your family profile for 1-3 months. Nannies can see your profile and you can see theirs. You can communicate through email or phone until you decide that you want to set up an interview. We actually found our first nanny through "Nannies4Hire.com", but some others are "GoNannies.com" and "Enanniesource.com". We had a wonderful experience with our first nanny. She was with our family for 2 1/2 years. We paid her $10/hr for the first year and a half and then $11/hr the last year. She finally moved on to become a kindergarten teacher. She was amazing with the girls and kept them very active. It was hard to see her go. We searched for her replacement which took about 2 months and finally settled on a young mom (25) who had an 7 month son and a 4 1/2 year old son. This wasn't an option for us the first time, but since the girls were older, we thought they might enjoy the playmates. This situation did not turn out well! I found out after a couple of months that she was leaving my daughters in the car with her baby while she took her son into school and checked him in/picked him up, ran into the gas station, the coffee shop, etc. She was also sending the older kids to the basement(finished) and telling them to play quietly until she told them to come up and would shut the door and nap with the baby! There were many more little things, and I finally made the decision to let her go. The icing on the cake was when I came home early to fire her, she was out in my driveway smoking! She was supposedly a non smoker. Anyway, we now have a young gal getting ready to go to college in the fall taking care of the girls two days a week and grandma is back to watching them 2 days a week. We pay our current nanny $10/hr also. I think $10-$12 is the usual rate for 1-2 kids, although infants might be different. It is scary leaving your kids with anyone I know, although I image they would get more attention from a nanny in the home. It is also nice to have that extra set of hands to help out with little chores here and there. Those babies will sleep alot :) Good luck and let me know if I can give you anymore info.

I have twin siblings who are 16 months old (weird, I know!) and my dad and step mom paid 600/wk. per child- so $2400 monthly- for a nanny. They went through a few before finding one they really, really liked. I'm not sure of what service they went through but I could ask if you'd like or even give you the name of the nanny they just had (the twins just started daycare a week and a half ago but ONLY because my step mom wanted them to be around other kids and have structured learning).
