Does anyone where I might be able to purchase tadpoles locally? Do any pet stores carry them? I live in SW Portland. Thanks for any help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your help!! That's exactly why I ask...I bought my 5-year a frog habit and it comes with a coupon for a free tadpole, however S&H cost $7.99 and they won't even start shipping until November. So, I was hoping to find something a little cheaper and a little sooner. I've gotten some good ideas from friends, too, of where to look in the wild, so we might have to plan a couple of fun excursions.

There's a little park off of SW Florence Ln and SW 74th, near Taylor's Ferry Rd in SW Portland, I think it is called Florence Pt Park that has a small sort of wild pond at it. In the late summer there are always lots of baby frogs there, so I'm thinking that there are probably frog eggs in the pond at some point. Maybe tadpoles too? let us know if you find some. =)

I have not found/seen any in stores, but I have not searched exhaustively. Our neighbors had some and were raising them, and of course I asked. They said they caught them in a friends pond (water feature). So, if you have a neighbor or know of a house with a water feature that may be a good route. I found out that in OR you may catch them but if so, you must remove them, and you may not reintroduce any caught wildlife (fish, tadpoles, etc) into nature. Hope that helps. I know a few houses up here in Forest Heights that have their share of frogs (as evidenced by the nightly choruses!).

There is a small plastic frog habitat set up you can buy at Toys R Us or Learning Palace, or at least you could in the recent past. It comes with a coupon you mail away to get tadpoles. We got one for my son, but are waiting for more interest from him to get the tadpoles.

Reading this request brought up lots of great memories of finding our own tadpoles in streams around our house. We lived outside the city limits. Do our streams no longer have tadpoles? I feel sad about a lot things that have changed that our children will never experience.

I hope that you can find some tadpoles. You might try talking with people who live outside small towns to see if they still have tadpoles in streams.
