I'm delivering at Paoli at the end of September. We start the hospital sponsored classes in a few weeks- but I was wondering if anyone would share their experience of delivering at Paoli Hospital. How were the nurses, were the rooms satisfactory, are you garaunteed (sp) a room to yourself, are they accomodating of your requests- that sort of thing. My OB is Dr. Chastney. Thanks!

What can I do next?

As all the other mothers have stated -- Paoli is great! I had both of my children there and it was a really nice experience. The staff is nice and supportive. I happened to have a private room both times, but I know they don't like to make any guarantees. You definitely shouldn't worry about the hospital - you'll be in good hands. Good luck.

I delivered both my kids (3 and 13 months) at Paoli and LOVE it! I had an appendectomy there and my DH had a kidney stone removed and both those experiences were good. I had the same practice (Marlino and Anthopolous delivered my children) and have no complaints. I was in a private room for the delivery with both, but ended up having to move to the overflow maternity area the next day, but the room was still private. I don't think they share rooms at all. The nurses there are absolutely wonderful, I went natural with my second (not really planned) and was terrified and the nurses helped me through it so much. I couldn't have done it without them. My first was also in the NICU for 4 days and the doc and nurses were awesome.

K.,
I delivered at Paoli with the same group (I had Dr. Marlino) and I also work in the Main Line Health system. I was amazed at how wonderful the nurses were and the entire staff in general. Each one got better and better. I did have a private room and I believe that is guaranteed (I did have to have a c-section though). Honestly it was the best experience and I have no complaints. Good luck!

I delivered my son at Paoli 5 years ago and I LOVED it! The nurses were absolutely wonderful and if I remember right, every patient in the maternity ward has a specific nurse assigned to them for each shift so they are there for you as soon as you call. As long as nothing has changed you are guaranteed your own room and actually the room I delivered in was the room I stayed in the whole time. I thought the hospital was great and the nurses/doctors were exceptional.

Good luck!

I delivered at Paoli in June of 2005 and am due to go back in a few weeks. I loved delivering there. The rooms are nice and you do always get your own. The nice part is that you don't have to move when it is time to have the baby. You deliver right there in the room (if you are having a vaginal delivery, a c-section you would obviously go to an OR). The nurses are great, all the ones I had were very friendly. The ward is safe as well, so no random people can just roam in and out. They have a secured door and a receptionist as soon as you enter who will call you if you have any visitors. I have sent several friends too and they all had similar experiences.

Dr. Chastney delivered my third at Paoli and I only wish that I had delivered my first two there (they were at Lankenau with Marlino). They do try to keep everybody with their own private room...especially if you have a c-section (which I did all 3 times). The nurses were wonderful, the rooms were lovely. There is a reason that many refer to the Maternity ward at Paoli as "The Paoli Hotel"...because it is such a nice place to be!

Dear K.,

Congratulations! You will absolutely love Paoli! I was always a Bryn Mawr Hospital kind of "girl". I went there for everything. I delivered my first three children there. Then when I was expecting my fourth child, my doctor switched to only delivering at Paoli. I was a little nervous about it, but, I'll tell you what.....that was the BEST experience I had ever had. I was on bedrest there for about a week, then they delivered my daughter 8 weeks early. Their NICU is top notch, the personal attention you get there is fabulous. The nurses are AWESOME. When I was on bedrest, they were always popping in to keep me company and check in on me when they could. It was such a nice environment. It's a very small unit and everyone, and I mean EVERYONE is really friendly. My daughter is 4 now, and several of my friends and family have delivered there after I had and believe it or not, the nurses still remember us.

You are in good hands, and I'm sure you will have a wonderful, personal experience, I can almost guarantee it. Best wishes!

I had my son at Paoli and loved the hospital. I have my daughter at Bryn Mawr, and definitely preferred Paoli over Bryn Mawr. The staff was very nice. You deliver & stay in the same room. You do have your own room and they are nice & big. Let me know if you have any other questions, but I definitely did have a good experience there.

I delivered both of my children at Paoli. I was very happy with the staff and I will be having my 3rd child at Paoli in a few months. I did have my own room both times. The hospital is very clean and the nurses were very helpful in teaching my husband and I what to do with a newborn. We had no clue with our 1st child. Best wishes to you!!

I had my baby girl at Paoli on September 28, 2006. I absolutely loved the hospital and the staff! I love that the rooms are private and that you never leave the room when it comes time to deliver. The baby does not leave the room either. They clean them up and keep them with you. I will make one suggestion, and it was hard for me to do, but really take advantage of the night nurses taking the baby to the nursery. You will get some much needed rest and they will take very good care of the baby! Are you being induced? I was. Best of Luck!

Hi K.!
OMG - I LOVE Paoli!!!!! I delivered both of my children at Paoli and have had the best experiences there. Actually, Dr. Chastney delivered my second child. You are not "guaranteed" a private room, but they do their best to accomodate that. Even when they were super busy, I had a private room, altho I know doubling-up can happen. The nurses are fantastic (my best friend happens to be one of them) and they really go out of their way to help you with whatever you need. YOu should have the best experience! Good Luck!

they are AMAZING at Paoli!! you get your own personal nurse when you get admitted, and the rooms are awesome. you are in the same one from the time you enter until you leave. Unless there are a ton of babies. this happened to me, we were moved our last night, but it was still a private. if you want to nurse there are lactation consults who will come in and help you. they encourage the baby to "live-in" with you, but they will take the baby at night so you can sleep. i will never deliver anywhere else!!

oh yeah, if we deliver prior to 9 PM, they will play a lullaby over the loud speaker for the whole hospital to hear!

I delivered at Paoli last October and had a good experience. There is no guarantee of a private room, although they would only double up if they are over flowing and there is no where else to go. I started out in a delivery room (although I had a C-section) and then the day after I was moved to a post partum room. So you may have to be moved during your stay, but it wasn't too big of a deal. In general most of the nurses were great, although there were a couple that weren't overly friendly. But all in all they were great so no worries there. The only bad thing that happened to me was that the evening after I delivered my bed broke and would not lie down from the sitting position and they were not able to get me a new bed until I moved rooms at noon the next day. So I had to sleep sitting up the night after having a child! That's pretty much my only complaint. Dr. Bussard delivered me...you will do great with that group. Good choice! I was a nurse at Paoli at the time so I tend to be overly critical of everyone and they definitely got my stamp of approval. Good luck!

I delivered my 13 month old daughter at Paoli and had an incredible experience. My labor was extremely fast and it could have been a very stressful experience, but the nurses were amazing and totally put me at ease. The nurses were so attentive when I was there in fact that I thought I was their only patient, but learned upon checking out that there were lots of other families there as well!

I have heard during busy times that you could possibly be asked to share a room, but I have also heard that it rarely happens. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think it can happen in any hospital in extreme situations, but I doubt you will have to deal with it. BTW - the rooms are very comfortable, and if you ask the nurses, they will help you set up a little cot for your hubby/signif other. My husband said it wasn't the most comfortable place he ever slept, but at that point he was so tired that he was just grateful for sheets and a pillow!

Good luck!
