I am trying to find a few good products that are for my 14 month old and are naturally based and free of toxic chemicals. Does anyone know of a good sunscreen or bug spray that is natural and non - toxic but actually works? I'd also like to find a chemical free disposable face and hand wipe. Thanks!

What can I do next?

The best place to find these sort of products are at a good health food store. I shop at one frequently.

Google Melaleuca. They have some great products. Also, try Dr. Mercola's website. He has some great products, but they are pricey.

California Baby products work really well, they are available online, at Whole Foods, and Target. If you go to EWG.org (environmental working group), they have a skin deep section where they rate the safety of skin products. Good Luck!

L.,

My baby girl has eczema so our pediatrician recommended using Aveeno Baby sunscreen this summer. I believe it's all natural. It's expensive but it's one of the only sunscreens that is fragrance-free.

Hi L.-

I'm in the same boat as you with the chemical-avoidance. My cousin recently sent me a really cool website http://safemama.com/ that you can check out. The nice thing is that they review the products for you (versus trying to sell you stuff). Be careful with natural stuff though, the sunscreen I bought yesterday has Shea butter in it and my son is allergic to tree nuts so now I have to return it :(

My son is 13 months old...

For the sunscreen, I use the Arbonne 30+ and for the bug spray I use "Quit Bugging Me Insect Spray" at Babies R Us ($7.99). The sunscreen is chemical free and the bug spray is Deet, PABA and Paraben free.

I am so glad you are wanting to use natural toxin free products. They are so much better for us and our children. I switched about 1 year ago and will never go back to walmart again! They are toxin free, free of phosphates, free of chlorine, biodegradable, natural and organic and hypoallergenic. Would love to share with you more about it. I found the products online at a cheaper price and work better. I use a lotion that is great but also can be used as an insect repellent. They have wipes that are great even safe for baby wipes. Not sure about bug spray so when you find one let me know!!

California Baby products are great they have an awesome suunscreen and also Colorscience Sunforgettable is wonderful! The Sunforgettable is a mineral based powder sunscreen you brush on and safe for babies under 6 months. You have to order Colorscience products online or go to their website www.colorscience.com and they will give you a list of local salons here in Charlotte that sell it. I ordered mine from www.skinchic.com it is expensive, but well worth it and will last all summer. You can buy California Baby procucts from their website www.californiababy.com, from Target and also most health food stores. You get a better selection and price online.

Hope you find something you like!

I use the Shaklee baby wash and lotion to make my own wipes. Super natural and cheap!

1 roll strong, thick white paper towel
1/2 tsp Small Wonders baby bath
1/4 - 1/2 tsp Small Wonders Creamy baby oil
http://www.shaklee.net/lthigpen/product/BabyCare
1 cup warm water
1 air tight container

Each roll of paper towels will make two boxes of wipes. You also have two options for the style of diaper wipes to make. You can either cut the roll of paper towels in half; leaving them in a roll, or you can tear apart the towels and fold them to fit into the box. The later was my preferred choice.

If you have chosen the folded method, place half of the towels in the box and pour in half of the liquid. Then add remaining towels and remaining liquid on top of them.

If you have chosen the rolled method, be sure to remove the cardboard from the middle after adding the liquid. After the towels have set for a short while, they will absorb the liquid more evenly and will keep fresh for several weeks.

You may have to adjust the water content a little depending on the paper towel you choose.

You can also use regular baby bath and lotion or oil, but I had to use 2-3 tsp of them and they are not natural.

Along the same lines, have you thought about your indoor cleaning products. My kids were getting very irritated by all the unnatural cleaners I was spraying. We switched about a year and a half ago and it has made a huge difference.

http://www.shaklee.net/lthigpen/gc_yourhome1

I only replaced our all-purpose cleaner with Basic-H2 and the SOS pads with Scour Off for the entire house. All the products are great we just can't afford everything.

Hi L.-

We use Buzz Away Towelettes and Spray and it seems to work.
(available at the health food store.
As far as sunscreen, I used to use the health food store kind, but they were very expensive. I now look for sunscreen which has Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide as it is a block. I use Banana Boat Baby Tear Free or Baby Lizard Australian Sunscreen (says it is chemical and fragrance free (but I still see chemicals) or there's another Baby sunscreen in a pink bottle with the picture of a little girl on the front.

Hope this helps

Hi L., I recommend Reflect Outdoor Balm SPF 15 for Natural sunscreen. I used it at the beach 2 wks ago and it does work great! It is a hydrating sunscreen, doesn't harm people or the environment. It is not water based, so a little goes along way. MiEnviron 'buzz free zone' is Certified Organic, it is safe to use on people and pets and will not harm the environment. No synthetic chemicals, no Methlyparabens. I am listed on the Mama Perks, where you can go to my website for more information on these and other products. It is important for us to know what we are putting on our skin. My website is www.blueridge.mionegroup.com.
I believe in our products 110%, they are wonderful!

Do you have a health food store near you? They will have whatever you are looking for. Also, Burt's Bees products are sold in many drug stores now, and they are all natural. We have a store near us called "Blue Moon Elise" that has a web site and does shipping, you could check them out. I think you are wise to avoid chemicals whenever possible. Clorox has started selling a chemical free line at Walmart, mostly cleaning products. Good luck!

I used California Baby chemical free bug spray with and Earth's Best chemical free sunscreen with my daughter. Just keep in mind chemical free sunscreen is generally very thick and the skin doesn't really absorb it. It works by sitting on top on the skin. A lot of people have complaints about there kids looking "white" or "like a ghost". Doesn't look too bad if you don't overapply.

I use this site as a resource for product safety. I use Badger or California Baby sunscreen and Burt's Bees outdoor bug spray. I get my that on Diapers.com where I order these cool Swiss non chlorine biodegradable diapers. They are called Natural Baby Care, even the bag they come in is compostable. I collect dirty diapers in a paper bag and throw that away because any garbage biodegradable or not does not decompose in the absence of oxygen.
