Looking for Place to Sell Antiques/collectibles in Plano Area

We have a garage full of my newly-divorced MIL's collectibles, dishes, silver serveware, glassware, nicnacs, etc. She comes from a wealthy family and apparently many of these items, which belonged to her mother and grandmother, are worth quite a bit of money. We would like to sell it, but we know NOTHING about antiques and are afraid that our lack of knowledge will result in a super lowball offer from someone who knows what it's all worth. I have tried to go through each piece and try to identify it, but not everything has an identifiable mark and there's simply too much stuff to try to go through it piece by piece.

Anybody have any experience in this area and have a recommendation as to how we might handle this?

Thanks so much in advance for any help!

K.

My husband and I deal in antiques and collectibles specializing in vintage dinnerware and crystal. My husband is also an accredited appraiser with the Dallas chapter of the International Society of Appraisers. If you would like to call or email my husband, he can send you in the right direction depending on the age, style, condition and origin of the items you have. If you have a list of marks or brand names on some of the items, that would be helpful. You can email my husband at ____@____.com name is Jeff.

I don't really know of any to place to recommend, but I will tell you to do your homework. Take inventory (no matter how much time it takes) and try to go on line to find as much as you can. When my friend let someone come in and do her mother's estate, the woman just sold things - some was junk and some worth much more than she got for it. Check e-bay and craigslist to see if you see any of the things you have and what they are priced.
Take pictures and go spend some time in the library looking through antique book, crystal books, etc.
Don't be in a hurry to just get rid of it. Also, be sure to check to make sure the person you may decide to use has references. Check them out. E-mail if you'd like to talk about it.

I suggest you visit a very reputable antique shop and ask the owner for a suggestion as to who could help you sell these things. We recently had someone do a moving/estate sale for us. There were things of value as well as garage sale items. I was disappointed that the people who did the sale treated everything as if it were a liquidation. Some things could have been sold for much more on Craig's List or EBay. Also, because you have things of value, whoever does the sale should be able to take charge cards, not just cash. The price people will pay is usually more if they have the freedom of charging.

Try going to the local Antique Mall. Walk around and look at the stuff on display. Then if you see a stand that looks trustworthy, then inquire of the owner and go from there.

Good luck.
