Hello moms!

I have been given two shopping bags full of pears! Anyone have any good recipes. I don't know what I am going to do with them. I have never canned anything before either so if that is a suggestion, I would need step-by-step instructions.

Pear cake is the best! If you can find a recipe for apple cake and then subsitute the pears. I have a recipe from my grandma if you would like. Just post back so I know to give it to you. It is the best because it reminds me of coffee cake. Not too sweet and no icing required!

My mother just gave me a huge bag of pears also. They make great pies. Just follow any apple pie recipe and substitute the pears. That is what I have done in the past.

Buy a box of Sure-Jell. The box will have step by step directions inside for making jelly, jam & preserves. You can also check the Ball Blue Book of canning for spiced pears.

Sorry I'm posting this late but here's my fave fresh pear recipe: It's called Fresh Pear Cake. I used to make it a lot (my parents had 2 pear trees) & also won blue ribbons on it at the fair a couple of times, enjoy!:

Fresh Pear Cake:
3 Cups Flour, 1 Tsp Nutmeg, 1 Tsp Cinnamon, 2 Cups sugar, 1 cup chopped pecans, 2 Tsp Vanilla, 1 Tsp baking Powder, 3/4 Cup Oil, 1 Tsp Baking Soda, 3 Cups Finely chopped Pears, 3 Eggs.
Sift together flour, baking powder, soda, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside. Combine oil, sugar & cream together in large mixing bowl. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing after each. Add vanilla and pears. Stir in nuts. Bake at 350 til knife inserted comes out clean. Usually 45 min. to 1 hr.
It has a lot of batter so it makes a big cake, I usually used a bundt pan since they're deep. It came out real good.
You can also use this recipe for Banana Bread, Zuchinni Bread or Cake. You can also substitute applesauce for the pears in case you'd like to try that.

I made this dessert for a dinner party a few years ago (when someone had given me lots of pears) and it was a big hit. I served it with either vanilla ice cream or whipped cream...can't remember. Either way, it was really good.

Almond Pear Clafouti

You can view the complete recipe online at: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/10706

Almond Pear Clafouti
4 firm-ripe pears, peeled, cored, and sliced
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
3/4 cup sliced blanched almonds
3/4 cup milk
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
3 large eggs, beaten lightly
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond extract (preferably pure)*
3/4 cup self-rising cake flour
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar

*Pure almond extract is available at specialty foods shops.

Preheat the oven to 400F. and butter a 10-by 2-inch round (1-quart capacity) baking dish. In the dish toss the pears gently with the lemon juice and spread them evenly in the dish.

In a blender grind fine 1/2 cup of the almonds, add the milk, 6 tablespoons of the butter, the eggs, the vanilla, and the almond extract, and blend the mixture until it is smooth. In a bowl whisk together the flour, 1/2 cup of the sugar, and a pinch of salt and stir in the milk mixture, stirring until the batter is combined well. Pour the batter over the pears, drizzle it with the remaining 2 tablespoons butter, and sprinkle it with the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar and remaining 1/4 cup almonds. Bake the clafouti in the middle of the oven for 40 minutes, or until it is golden brown, and let it cool on a rack for 15 minutes. Serve the clafouti warm.

Ha, we live off of pears this time every year. We have the trees.

Treat them just like apples.
Apple Pies, cobblers, slices in salads (with pecans or walnuts). Pear butter, pear cake, baked pears.
