So What Happened?

I should have let everyone know my son has been allergic since birth so he is not newly diagnosed I appreciate the allergiy resorses but already new about them I am a member of kids with allergies, also FAAN.I already get every whole and natural product to cook with at the grocery store including vegan. If it wasn't for vegan food i would be lost!!I was just basically looking for some new recipes because ours are getting old My son is getting tired of the same old same old.For the many who responded who also have allergies I have found a wonderful milk alternative called Darifree it is made by vances foods.
It can be purchased at www.vancesfoods.com They also have a varity of non dairy foods. This milk is made from potatoes and I love cooking and baking with it it tastes alot better than soy or rice milk.It also contains as much calcium as regular milk.

My girlfriend in Canton has a son who is severely allergic to dairy and she tells me that Trader Joe's has dairy free animal crackers and other foods that are reasonably priced.

Hello!
I myself am allergic to dairy, although not eggs. I don't know if this helps, but there are countless vegan cookbooks and recipes. I have some that I bought online at amazon. And when ordering at restaurants, most chefs/cooks are familiar with veganism and will make special meals. Vegan food has no dairy or eggs, or any other animal products for that matter.

Good luck!

My family has a history of high colestrol so I simply skip the eggs in a lot of recipes and use extra applesauce instead of oil and eggs.

I would love to swap recipes with you. I have a 19 month old who also has dairy and egg allergies. We carry an epi-pen for her dairy allergy, as she could have an anaphalactic reaction, as well.

I have a great birthday cake recipe, which I actually think tastes great, but we are having a lot of trouble with breakfast foods in general.

I have read a few cook books for allergic kids, but they are rather unrealistic given all the ingredients and steps.

K.,

I have a son with a dairy allergy. I know how hard this can be. I have found a great deal of help from the library. I get vegan cookbooks. Since vegans do not eat eggs or dairy, it is the best way to find out how to substitute other things for the eggs in baked goods. You can also type in vegan recipes in a search. Whole Foods grocery stores carry vegan cakes!! If you need any more specific help I would be glad to answer you.

Hello K.,

I had to avoid dairy and soy at all costs the first year after my second daughter was born because she was dairy & soy intolerant, and I was breastfeeding. We drank enriched rice milk - the calcium is from limestone, but you may want to check with your doctor first and we still use canola oil in everything from brownies to bread. I know it has to be very frustrating because you have to closely read EVERY label you come across! I shopped (and still do for the most part) around the outer edge of the grocery, in the real produce, health food, meats, etc., arena and left the middle premade foods alone.

Imagine foods, the maker of the rice milk has a decent site with some recipes:

Here's another with special diet books:

http://www.specialdiets.org/books-milk.htm

We also found that O'Charleys restaurants were great for cooking with no dairy/oil and no butter seasonings in the veggies. Of course you have to be extra cautious though.

Good luck, my heart goes out to you!

Hi K. -

We too have had to deal with allergies in the past...though not quite as severe. One treatment that provided great success was acupuncture, specifically something called A.E.T. (Allergy Elimination Treatment). This treatment helped tremendously with our environmental and food allergies, as well as managing an overgrowth of candida in our systems. Another was a visit to the Borne clinic in Grand Rapids for blood tests.

Though I have no recipes, Energy Foods makes a GREAT egg replacer. That and a little applesauce always worked well. Also the Gluten Free Pantry makes some tasty treats...well, mixes...especially the ginger cake...one of our faves.

K.,

My son is just a year and we are on the verge of discovering a whole host of allergies with him! He is severely allergic to both eggs and cow's milk so we were using all soy products but now allergists are convinced he is also sensitive/moderately allergic to soy as well. It is so difficult and frustrating trying to figure out what to make him to eat and balancing the nutrients I know he desperately needs.

For his first birthday I made a vegan chocolate birthday cake from a recipe I got off the internet. It was fantastic! Tasted like regular chocolate cake. I used a commercial frosting with no eggs/milk and he loved it!!! Here is that recipe.... just copy and paste this address into your browser.

My girlfriend who is a nutritionist suggested that I look into rice based products and look online for vegan recipes. I understand that Krieger's market in Cuyahoga Falls and Mustard Seed in Fairlawn have a good variety of alternative products.

I read every label and have been scrounging everywhere for new recipes. So if you come across any or I do I'd be glad to swap with you.

Best of luck!

Hello,
My son went to school with a boy with severe peanut allergies and I know what precautions were needed for him so even though we don't deal with that issue in particular I feel for what you're going through on his behalf. I can't help you with your specific request, there's a good chance if your son's immune system was at an optimal level, his allergies could diminish. I'd be happy to let you know how other moms make this happen.

Hi,

My two year old is also allergic to eggs and milk (all proteins). AND peanuts! So I feel for ya! My little guy also has an epi-pen but not for milk or eggs (they usually do not get one for those allergins, as an antihistamine- such as Benedryl works). Unlike milk and eggs, peanuts affects all body organs, like bee stings, where it is critical to have an epi pen. I'm curious to learn which doctor prescribed that for your little one!

Anyway,
I have loads of recipes. What kinds of foods are you thinking of? Meat based meals, vegan dinners? Pancakes? Let me know and I will load em on ya!

Hi K.,

My daughter is 22 months old and has multiple food allergies (wheat, barley, gluten, egg, peanuts) and while she's not allergic to dairy, I do have a suggestion for finding recipes. You could visit the FAAN (Food Allergy & Anaphalaxis Network) website - they sell books and have some recipes posted for those with food allergies. Also, I have found the Circle of Food Allergic Families (COFAF), a support group that gets together to discuss living with allergies and they do exchange recipes, to be extremely helpful. I don't know the websites names off hand but you can Google them and find out. Is he also allergic to soy milk? Because that may be a good alternative - but then I don't know too much about dairy allergies. Does he have an allergist? I was given a list by ours and it has a list of ingredients to avoid. Good Food Co. East (located at 74 W. Maple in Troy) sells an egg substitute (not derived from egg or dairy) that seems to work well for my daughter. They also sell food and groceries that tend to be allergen free - the Enjoy Life brand is free of all of the top 8 allergens (including egg and dairy); they also sell cookie and cake mixes that do not contain egg and dairy.

I hope this is helpful to you and your family.

God bless,
C.

My son really cant have dairy either, not a severse allergy but enough that he gets a tummy ache. I know that there are some great soy alternatives out there, I beleive its stoney brook farms that makes a soy type yogurt (they have it in the organic section at Giant Eagle on plaze blvd). Also I am selling a product called Wildtree Herb and its all natural sauces, culinary blends, breads, marinades etc...Its really easy things you can make with the items your son can eat. If you want more info please let me know (you can email me at ____@____.com). I can give you a complete list of ingrediants on all the items so you can make sure its what he can eat OK.

I am glad to help and I hope you get some good recipes!
