Hubby and I are getting away for our anniversary (only one night and not alot of money to go with.) We have been to Sybaris (loved it but too expensive for this time and been there done that.) We love experiences and new places. We live in Richton Park (far south suburb) and are willing to drive an hour or more. If any one has a favorite place/ hotel or attraction please share. I'd appreciate it!

So What Happened?

We got away for a whole 24 hours and it was great. We took some of the advice you all gave us and went downtown Chicago. We got tickets for Jersey Boys and sayed at the Palmer House Hilton (pretty inexpensive from hotwire). It was beautiful and wonderful. After the show we went for a walk and ended up playing in water walls at Millenium park. Then we went to a wonderful Pizza place around the corner from the hotel and the waiter was fun and the food was great. Today my husband left for camp (today is our actual anniversay) and so one of my friends and I are going out in honor of the day. Thanks for all the responses.

Starved Rock Lodge is an excellent idea. If you like the city go to Priceline.com for a 4star hotel really cheap!! I stayed at the Hyatt on Wacker Dr. for $65! Like Lincoln Park area? Try the Beldon Stratford across from the Concervatory and Zoo.

Personally, I love downtown Chicago. Staying in a place like the Palmer House, which boasts one of the loveliest lobbies or the Drake hotel is another wonderful place with a great lobby. Even having lunch somewhere and hanging out in these lobbies and listening to someone playing the piano is a lovely way to spend some time. Depending on when you are going, many of the Chicago Hotels offer special discounts and packages. Staying closer to Navy pier is a wonderful option too. Many lovely eateries.

Waking up and walking along the lakefront in the morning or taking a stroll along Michigan avenue and window shopping (and people watching) is very fun!

Even if you only want to make a day of it, take the Metra train, from Richton Park and it will end at Millennium Station which is right by Millennium Park - (sorry...you may know this already.) You can have an inexpensive afternoon, having a picnic lunch in the park (try to check and see if there is any free entertainment going on at the band shell there) or take in a matinee Broadway show. The theatres are very near the train station - easy walking distance.

Love the city! Happy Anniversary, whatever you choose to do.
With a household like that....are you SURE you can't get away for longer????? Wow!

I have stayed overnight in both Geneva and St. Charles. In St. Charles, we stayed at the HOtel Baker and in Geneva, I can't remember the name, but it was also right on the river. I am not sure how these prices compare to Sybaris, but the towns are lovely, right on the river, good restaurants and lots of shopping (and just fun to look)

we have stayed at the Grey Goose Inn in Chesterton, Indiana - and have enjoyed it. The rooms are decorated beautifully and it is tucked away from traffic with nice grounds for a little walk and a short drive to the dunes for a hike.

A Bed and Breakfast can be a fun affordable experience.

WE have also stayed at the Wheeler Home which is just South of downtown.

The inn at Starved Rock is really nice and not expensive. They do have a really nice restaurant. And it's a beautiful time of year to be there - the hiking is awesome.

Well since you guys like the Sybaris, you could try Essence Suites, in Orland Park. My husband and I went there and it was nice. It is a little cheaper.

My Husband & I have gone to the Courtyard in Valpo. They have a presidential suite that is very nice. I'm not sure of the price because we have our Daughter-in-Law working there & get a discount. The room is perfect for romance, not Sybaris, but they do have a great indoor/outdoor pool & hat tub. The area has lots to do & a great steak house across the street. If you call there, ask for Shelli & she will take good care of you. 1-###-###-####.
Good Luck, S. K.
