Looking for Music Cd's and Videos for My 10 Month Old!!!!!

I like the Putumayo series that you can get at book stores and online. I used them for my daughter when I was pregnant and also for my third graders. It's got music from around the world and in different languages and exposes them to totally different sounds and instruments.

Your local library has all of these things and it is free!!

I know that mine allows me to take a vieod out for a week at a time. They also have classes and activities age appropiate too. Each library is different but they are a great source of fun for the kids.

Also I shop at consignment stores like The Other Mother in S. Orange where they sell gently used childrens items. I also shop at the GoodWill and Salvation Army. You can also tray www.craigslist.org and check in the "Free" section. People give all kinds of things away like, clothes, toys, videos, furniture. It's great!

Our 9 month girl loves the Baby Signing Time series. It teaches sign language.

May still be a little bit too young for these, but the books that come with music CDs have been great for my kids. The other music that my kids have loved are the Curious George CD - Jack Johnson music, and the Land of Nod CDs (which I think are a little bit expensive - we got as a gift).

DVDs are tougher for me because we don't watch a lot of them and my kids have little attention span for them. The Dora and Diego dvds have been good, but once I introduced them they have wanted Dora and Diego everything. But that's controllable.

Sounds Like Fun and I'm Going Green, both by Discovery Toys, would be two suggestions. More than a million copies have been sold of the first CD; I used to put my son down for naps with it and he could subliminally hear the sounds of the alphabet and counting and simple math...all done through the lovely lyrics and melodies of Barbara Milne. www.toysofdiscovery.com

Jack's Big Music show was great, but it's no longer on. You should be able to find DVD's of the shows though. Other than that, I don't know why everyone you've spoken to says you should have your son watch videos. The APA actually advises AGAINST watching too much TV/videos before at 2. Music definitely should be introduced, but not by watching it on TV. Your child's introduction to music should be a very physical one - listen to some child-friendly CD's (simple melodies and beats, rhymes), and dance with your child, clap his hands, stomp his feet to the beat, etc. No need to go buy anything special for him. He'll love bonding with you through music, and so will you.

Baby mozart is best from the group of baby einstein dvds. Its a nice way to get baby used to classical music. Also soothes baby when fussy.

I love laurie berkner and david weinstone cds. Laurie's dvd is also great.

Go to noggin.com and find jacks big music show and listen to the kids' singers highlighted on the show. They're all wonderful!!

Smart of you to do this research!!

A 10 month old doesn't need tv or videos and some authorities recommend no screen time before age 2. Not that my kids were kept away from tv that long but my 3 year old didn't really seem interested even in kids shows until he was almost 2. PBS has many great kids shows but most are aimed at toddlers or preschoolers at the youngest--like Seaseme Street. You coulld try your library for videos you can try out without investing the money.

You know, I have to agree with the posters who have questioned why "everyone keeps saying..." My son had absolutely no interest in watching anything on TV when he was that age (and believe me, there were times I wished he had!). Do you have cable? We have comcast and there are various baby shows on demand, including some of the baby music video types. Or if you get the channel Sprout, they have similar short shows in the evening. So, no need to buy.

Honestly, at 10 months the only thing my daughter was really interested in was Jack's Big Music Show (on Noggin). As for music CD's, she mostly liked Laurie Berkner. She is actually on Jack's Big Music Show as well, but we had been listening to the CDs before we started watching the show. Now at almost 20 months she still LOVES Laurie!

As a mother of 3, a grandmother of 8 and great grandmother of 5. I don't understand why you would want to overstimulate your 10 month old with videos.. Read to him, sing to him, play with him, build blocks, talk to him, go to the park, the zoo.

I don't like to see a family in a restaurant with the children using their personal dvd player or gameboy or whatever other diversion from interacting with others they have.

The other day I was out with one of my daughters and we stopped for a meal, at the next table 2 moms with 2 young teen daughters were ALL on their cell phones! Then they were texting.

We were probably the last people in our neighborhood to get a tv and that was only because of the moon walk and we all wanted to see it.

From what I have read, the baby einstein products are good but not the intellectual stimulators the ads suggest.
