Looking for Good Family Cat

usually petsmart/petco have cats you can adopt. they usually have pretty good histories on if the cat is good with what age chilgren, other pets...

We have just an orange and white tabby cat that is wonderful. He doesn't bite, but is playful. Whatever you do, don't get one that is Siamese or even part Siamese. They are very temperamental!! I've always had good luck with tabby cats and calicos. As far as shedding, just get a domestic shorthair, versus a longhair or medium hair cat.

I don't think any breed in particular is good with small children over another breed. It really depends on each cat's personality. My cat looks very similar to my in-laws cat and yet they are totally different. My cat is a 'B' (very moody and sassy!) and their cat is so friendly and loving. A lap cat. Mine you have to hold in a headlock to keep her on your lap for a second! haha

Now for the shedding, avoid long hair and medium length hair as they shed the worst. So Persians and Himalayans wouldn't be an option. I think going with your garden variety of Domestic Shorthair would make a good choice. All cats will shed, unless you get a Sphinx (sp?)...hairless and creepy looking! LOL Rex's have short curly fur and probably don't shed that bad either. Russian Blues have shorter hair and great temperments... In fact there was one at the pound a few months ago (Southwest location on Hulen) and she is a great cat. VERY friendly. You can check the website to see what all is available. Goodluck on your kitty search! Remember too that if you feed them higher quality food and brush them, it will reduce the shedding problem on all breeds.

i'd recommend a maine coon cat. BUT they do have long hair... all you have to really do with them is brush him every day. they are very relaxed cats. can get to be about 15-20 lbs. we've had this breed several times since i was little and i have two now. they are soooo affectionate and ours, not all, are very "talkative".
tip: don't have your cats declawed. ya sure it might save your furniture... we used cat posts! any time they clawed the couch we squirt them with a water bottle and take them over to the post. they're very good about it now. also, declawed cats often feel the need to bite bc that's their only defense. so don't declaw, clip their nails with regular ppl nail clippers!!

I have 3 kittens that are looking for a good home. One in particular, a silver tabby, has a very sweet personality. The kittens are 3 months old and box trained. They have not yet had their shots, because we really dont have the money to do that right now. But they are clean, and kept indoors.
