Hi moms!
I currently have my sons 1st dental appointment scheduled for September 21st (that was the earliest I could get in when I called in May!). He's 4 so I know I'm late on this, but I really want it to be a very positive experience for him so he isn't scared of dentists like I was as a child. The dentist I have him scheduled with works at the office that my pediatrician recommended so I felt really good. The problem is, one of my best friends recently took her son to this same dentist and had a HORRIBLE experience with him. She had previously gone to another dentist at that office, but they have cut their hours down to only Fridays which didn't work for her (or me). My friend's son (7 yrs old)needed to get his first cavity filled and it was less than pleasant. Neither the dentist nor his assistant had any "bed-side manner" with her son and when he asked questions was basically told he was wrong and he shouldn't be so "difficult". He said that the air (laughing gas) he was breathing "smelled funny" and instead of indicating that there was something in it to relax him and make him comfortable he was told "It doesn't smell funny" and "There is nothing wrong with it." If a 7 year old asking questions about a procedure he's never undergone before is "difficult" this dentist has no right to be working on children in my opinion. My friend had to calm and reassure her son several times and with her in the room the dentist made comments to his assistant like "We've got a problem patient here". He may be 7 but he's not stupid or deaf. Her son also indicated at one point it "hurt" and was told "it does not" and they went right on drilling. NICE!

When the procedure was over, my friend went to talk to the dentist about what she saw, not to criticize but to help him, and he merely rolled his eyes at her. Not good!

Needless to say I do not want my son to see this guy or his assistant and am looking for any dentist (pediatric or not) who is great with kids. I'm in North Plymouth right on the edge of Maple Grove so anything near that area would be great.

Thanks to all of you in advance for any assistance you can provide.
K.

After having two horrible dental experiences for my now 4 year old son-we went to Riverdale in Coon Rapids. They were amazing! He's seen Dr. Darcy twice now and her and her assistant are GREAT with kids. Not over the top, they're just genuinely nice and care. The front office staff is great too.
The Coon Rapids location may not be ideal for you-it's a 20 minute drive for us too-but so worth it! I can't believe some Dentists have such bad bed side manner-Now that I've found this one...I will not change.
Go to http://www.cavitypatrol.com/ and see-it's a cool place.

If you're willing to drive a little ways - I ADORE my daughter's dentist in Roseville. She's incredible and has helped my daughter through some pretty tough teeth issues.

Her name is Dr. Ellie Sakhi and she works at the Dental Specialists with children, only. I love, love, love her and am so happy that we found her. My daughter even loves her!

I've never had to wait that long for an appointment, either - :)

Hi K.
If you're willing to drive just a bit farther-- my inlaws have a dental office in Elk River-- just up 101 on Main.
Elk Dental.
They are great with kids-- in fact-- some LIKE to go-- my coworkers and many others we know say that????
They have a lot of young hygenists, it's bright, tv and aquarium in lobby for waiting.
Just throwing it out there. Obviously we drive from St. Paul cuz it's family-- but the girls prefer it even though we know others in the cities.

About me: 48 yo perfusionist, wellness coach for nationwide online biggest loser for $, wife and mom to 7 you twin girls

Out of curiosity where did your friend go? A coworker had a similar experience, just wondering if it was the same place. I go to Riverdale Pediatric dentistry in Coon Rapids. Its a hike for me too but I love it there and we only have 2 go 2x's per year. My Daughter is now 3.5. Last summer which was her 2nd visit she had a cleaning and x-rays. I was pregnant and could be with her, she did it all by herself! I think there website is www.cavitypatrol.com check it out.

My daughters go to Dr. Monica Kennard in Wayzata ###-###-####). She's a pediatric dentist - the lobby of her office is decorated in animal prints and she has big stuffed lion and elephant that the kids like. The dental nurses have all been great, and none of them (the nurses or Dr. Kennard) ever pushes my older daughter who is more cautious and frightened to have her teeth looked at. They talk about "I'm just going to count your teeth" and "we're looking for sugar bugs" which is a term I've now started using at home when we brush (We've got to get all those sugar bugs out of your mouth). We haven't had to go through any procedures like fillings yet, so I can't say how they do with that, but so far we have been pleased, and we also have many other friends and acquaintances who go there.

Good luck!

We went to Camp Smile in Plymouth off highway 55 & 494. My son was 4 at his first appointment as well. They were great and my son told me he wanted to go to the dentist again.

Camp Smile Pediatric Dentistry

It did take me a few weeks to get in but it was well worth it to have my son have a great experience.

We're on the north side of plymouth too. I take my son to Camp Smile (a pediatric dentist) that works out of the westhealth building off 494 and hwy 55. He's been there twice now and had great experiences both times. The last time we were there, there was an adult there with down's syndrome who was also a patient there, and he was definitely having a hard time and could be considered "difficult", but the assistant and dentist were very good with him in my opinion.
I haven't had too much trouble getting him in for appointments, about 1 month wait usually.
Hope this helps.

We live in Elk River, but I would drive an hour to see Dr. Dennis Carreras at Dentistry for Children. He has offices in Sartell, Princeton and Monticello with different days at each office. He was AWESOME with my 3 year old daughter when she fell on the sidewalk and bashed her two top teeth. She LOVES going to the dentist even still!

Dr. Lee Lira in plymouth near Lunds off of Vicksburg Ln. He is sooo nice and patient with everyone! I think the office is officially called Cities Dental Group. I'm actually a dental hygienist and have worked with him before and really enjoy all of the staff there.
Good luck!

We like Dr. Darrell Johnsrud at Rice Lake Dental off of 94 and Weaver Lake Road in Maple Grove. He's good with our whole family, and doesn't try to charge extra for stuff/services you don't need.
