My daughter is 2 years old and is getting pretty tired of being stuck in the house with her parents and 5 month old brother. She loves to sing, dance, climb and jump, and books. Although the cold weather appears to have broken, we are looking for various indoore activities to entertain our toddler. We live in Burke, VA, so something nearby would be great.

We were hoping to keep costs minimal. Any ideas???

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone: Thanks so much for the great ideas. I will definitely give each of them a try. It's nice to know that we can get out there and have fun without it costing a ton of money. I will have to let you all know about our experience. Thanks again!

At Wakefield/ Audrey Morre rec Center they have a program on Fridays. It's on Braddock Road right off of Burke Lake Road. It's from 10am-noon and parents are free, I believe it's $3 a child. Bring any ride on toys you'd like to share. They have mats set up and balls to play with and your daughter can just run around for two hours inside their gym.
Also I take my 3 yr old to different parks n playgrounds. We love Hidden Oaks Nature Center off of Hummer Road in Annandale. They have free/cheap programs on Mondays(normally reservations required). Stuff like walking their nature trail and learning about animals and then stories and craft time, songs. Their address is
7701 Royce St
Annandale, VA 22003

Also there is a playgroup we go to on Thursdays(free) at 9900 Old Keene Mill Road, Burke Community Church. The previous mom in charge implemented some fun things...like a welcoming song and arts n crafts time. Thats from 10am-noon.
Oh there's another place called Hidden Pond Nature Center in Springfield off of Old Keene Mill(Greeley Blvd) with a little place that has frogs, snakes, fish to look at and arts n crafts(coloring etc). I can't remember their number but they have weird hours.
There's also this AWESOME life saver web site called www.our-kids.com And you can navigate to the DC metro area, they list every playground, park, consignment sale in the northern va area. They also have indoor playgrounds and tons of fun stuff to try.

Good Luck,

Wow, Pammy below had ALOT of great ideas! I have a 21 month old, and we take him to the local nature center, Long Branch in Arlington. There are snakes, turtles, fish, toads and an indoor pond...plus a playroom in back. It's free and open 6 days a week (closed Mondays.) They also offer GREAT Tiny Tots programs for $3, that are geared for 18 month-3 year olds. It's a fabulous deal. Check out the local nature center in your area!

Other ideas- local rec centers usually have an open play for a few dollars per child, local libraries and bookstores have story hour and sometimes sign language courses for kids, we visit the little art center nearby for short walk throughs, and even the playgrounds can be good for a 15-20 minute outing since they are running around. I also take him on little "hikes", which can be neat in teh cooler weather....we point out the big nests in the trees that you can actually see, the ice on the rivers, etc. Mind you, they're short walks, usually 20 minutes or so, but enough to let him get outside for a while.

The classes that the rec centers offers are very affordable. I have my todddler in a class called zoom around the room at South Run- it is $65 for 10 classes. South Run is probably closer for you than Audrey Moore.

I second the recommendation for Hidden Pond nature center and the Our Kids website. There is also an Our Kids newsletter that costs $20 a year.

There is a music class offered at a church in Fairfax off of Braddock Rd ( i am sorry i can not remember the name of the church) on Fridays. I believe that is is only 2-3 dollars. When I was home on maternity leave I would take the kids and my toddler LOVED it!!!

Hi there! Have you checked at your local library? I'm in Prince William County, and our library has lots of activities for the munchkins from weekly story times to special activities during the month to holiday "parties" as well. Check and see what is offered at your local library- most if not all are free. You could also check out some local Mommy groups, or check with your church too. Hope this helps!

I take our son to the Tiny Tots Program with Arlington's Nature Centers. I'm sure your local Recreation Center will have cheap or free toddler time. Check out the websites. Also, most libraries have story time, as do Borders and other big book stores. I also heard about an indoor bounce house. See if there's one near you.
