Looking for Best Digital Camera for Kids

Hi, My 6-year-old is very interested in photography. I have read hundreds of reviews that have said that the Fisher-Price, Little Tykes, V-Tech, and other lesser-known-brand kid cameras are built tough enough to withstand being dropped but have very poor image quality. Although he is quite responsible, he is only 6, so I don't want to spend a lot of money and then have him break the camera. Has anybody had a good experience with a digital camera that is both tough and produces quality images (they don't have to be professional quality, but he would be so frustrated if all of his pictures came out blurry). Thank You! S.

My mom send our daughters a Fisher Price camera for Christmas and they love it! It is very durable even for my 2 year old, who already broke my $300 camera twice by just dropping it. It is also extremely easy for them to hold, comes with a case, strap, and USB cord to connect to the computer.
What they like the best is that it works just like a grownup digital - you can zoom and see the pictures right after you take them. Yes, the screen is grainy and the pictures aren't top quality, but they don't seem to care. My 6 year old is just excited to take pictures of her friends at school, soccer, and even of her sisters without Mom hovering over her to make sure the camera isn't messed up.
My advice - get a kid camera for him to practice - taking steady pictures (so they're not blurry), zoom, framing a shot, etc. Then siblings can manhandle it without you having to worry (how crushed would he be if sister broke it?). When he's ready for a more delicate camera you'll know.
Recently I saw the Fisher Price camera at CVS for $29! Good luck!

Okay.. I research EVERYTHING online...I looked to see how many kids cameras I could find and only 3 "name brands" came up. Little Tykes, V-tech and Fisher Price. There were some nice 10 yo and up ones that don't have the rugged features for that take along oops I dropped a 6 yo would need. But they were cool to check out for if he continues in his love for taking picture.

On the 3 name brands, Little tykes doesn't tell me online what the pixel quality is. Of the remaining two, they are V-tech at .3 and Fisher price at a MUCH clearer 1.3. While these images will still be grainier than "professional" pictures or what you would expect to be taking with your own camera, you have to remember that a vertain amount of flexibility has to built in to account ruggedness and durability to last through being a child's camera, whether that child is responsible or not, accidents happen.

V-Tech offers enough memory to hold 200 pictures, Little tykes enough for 1000, and Fisher Price enough for 60. The both Fisher Price and V-Tech offers memory card slot to increase it's ability to store pictures (which is far more like mom's).

The LCD screens are V-tech at 1.8", Fisher price at 1.6" and Little Tykes at 1.3" bigger screens of course means it's easier for your child to see what he is taking a picture of. The size differences here thogh are not enough to be that noticible.

The least expensive one is Little Tykes at $40ish. Followed by Fisher Price at $55ish and most expensive is the V-Tech.

After reviewing the available info above, I would go with the Fisher Price one. It has the best options for your money and the highes t picture quality for this age group. When he turns 8 or 9 (depending on his maturity level) he can upgrade to one some of the disposable digital cameras to start and once he proves he can appropriatley care for those you can get him a nice pre-teen one of his very own (one even comes in a spiderman motif!).

I hope this helps!

my step daughter loves to take pictures, she'll be 6 in october and i'm planning to buy her a real digital camera for her birthday. she has the fisher price one now. I'm just going to go to best buy or new egg and get the best i can get for the best price. I've found them around $100 that appear easy enough to use and decent quality and its not so much $$ that if she drops it and it breaks I'm going to cry.

We bought my 7 year-old daughter an HP camera similar to this one for Christmas:

Hers wasn't quite as high megapixels, so it was cheaper (about $65 if I remember right) but it produces better pics than mine! It auto-focuses and auto-flashes and has an easy menu, but it really does eat up the batteries with its high digital zoom. It's relatively sturdy, but I'm sure to carry it when she isn't actively taking pictures.

We got so tired of the 0 megapixel kiddie-type cameras, too. Good luck!

My son got the Disney digital camera last year for his 5th birthday, and now he is almost 6. It has held up very well. It takes really decent pictures outside, but inside pics with the flash are sometimes tricky--the maing thing is to be the right distance away from the subject. Not every picture that he takes comes out well, but for the most part he has figured out what he needs to do to get a decent picture. He also loves playing with the Disney pix software that lets him choose backgrounds and stamps and lots of other stuff for the pictures. There's no memory card slot, but it holds around 200 pics. (Here's a link to the camera that he has: http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Blue-605-Disney-Camera/dp/B...)

Then my 3-year-old got the Fisher-Price camera for Christmas because she always wanted to play with her brother's camera, and at this point I am considering buying her a Disney camera like her brother's for her birthday. The reason: even though the Fisher-Price camera says you can use any photo software to transfer the pics to the computer, when you try to plug the camera in with the USB port, the computer never recognizes the camera. I asked a friend whose daughter also has the fisher-price camera if she could download the pics, and she wasn't able to do so either. This part has been very disappointing.

We bought my son who is now almost 4, a fisher price kid tough camera, the one that was always on tv and shows the little boy throwing down the stairs ect., for christmas, my kids are the type if the toy can or would break they could get it done at least in a week, but the camera is still around and kicking lol. That is from being dropped, and my youngest throwing it, we dont have carpet either, its hard wood floors. I love it its still taking great pics., and the batteries last longer in it then in my camera. I think he would love it, my son does, the pictures only come out blurry if sometimes they jump around while taking the pic, but if he stood there, ect and took it they come out great. i think it was only around $40 or $50 at walmart, im not sure and cant really remember, they sell cases for them also for around $15 i think. Good Luck and hope this helps you.

I bought the Fisher Price Digital camera for my 4 yo grandson for his birthday. He really loved it! He took pictures of EVERYTHING! It will also hook up to a computer so the pictures can be viewed and printed.

S.,
I would suggest, for a 6 year old, to start off with disposable cameras for a bit. After he has learned a bit of responsibility, then you can move on to more expensive. We are going on vacation this summer, and will be taking disposables for them. My boys are 5 and 7.
Good luck!!
