I say to go for the home daycare! I have ran an in home daycare for the past two years and have never regretted it! It took me about six months to get GOOD, STABLE children to watch, but I finally found them and I watched them all for the past year and a half. Here are some things that worked for me:

1. Start advertising NOW!!! This is the best time of year to get your customers, as families are moving, changing schools, etc.

2. Create a handbook that you can give your parents upon arrival. Put it in a folder, with other important papers like emergency contact information, food they eat, etc. I researched different preschools and daycares online and found information to include in my handbooks. You can also get forms that are VERY helpful on the State of Arizona Health Services website: www.azdhs.org(com?) Click on Office of Childcare Licensing, then click Childcare centers and under that tab it gives you a tab for Childcare Forms.

3. Create an area in your house for a 'classroom' Make it look like a 'real' preschool with a little table, shelves for toys and learning posters on the wall. Make it look as professional as you can. Gather any additional supplies needed from thrift stores and garage sales.

4. Advertise as much as you can on Craigslist. I put my ad on in the morning(before parents go to work), midday(lunch time for parents), and at about 5pm(so it is there when the get home) You will have to make a different ad each time, but it is worth it! Include pictures of your 'classroom' in your ad. To make reposting ads easier, I created a document in word and copied and pasted from that to make my ads look different, since Craigslist will only let you post one ad a day that is similar to another.

5. Contact Childcare Resource and Referral and get in their database. They also helped me get a fingerprint clearance card and CPR and First Aid certification.

I am no longer offering childcare out of my home as I just got a position as a preschool director, but feel free to ask me any questions and definitely let me know if you need any equipment or supplies, as I have a ton of stuff that I will no longer need:)

I would say not to go for the in-home daycare unless you are going to go with the Government programs. I did In-home for two years with a lic. and FBI Clearence. I had years of exp and lots of letters from people how thought I was great. The problem was I never got a child not even one with in the two years I was going it. I spoke with other moms and they are all running in to the same problem. There are to many daycares and not enough kids. To many In-home daycares that are are trashy and the owners are lieing so People are taking thier kids to center. Good luck on what ever you choose to do. I closed out my in-home daycare and lost around 2,000 and gained nothing.

I too am an RT...go to the Respiratory Department at the hospital you are currently employed with and ask them about a job cleaning equip or stocking equip on the floors. When I worked in Chicago we always employed students for this job. and it would be a great help to familarize yourself with the inner workings of a RT deptartment.

Hi B., I feel obligated to mention this since I see it's becoming quite popular when money gets tight to just open your home up and start a daycare business. I have been in the insurance industry for over 20 years and need to advise you of the liability risks that you have if you do this. Most insurance companies will not issue a homeowners/renters policy if there is a daycare in the home although some will offer an endorsement with limited coverage for an extra premium. Also, if you are running a daycare and you have a homeowner claim and they find out you have a daycare, they may deny the claim. You can get a liability policy to cover your daycare, but they are pricey, sometimes $100 or more per month, but you can figure this in your price per child that you charge. No matter how carefully you watch the children in your home, accidents can and do sometimes happen. This leaves you open to unique liability exposures. So please check with your current agent to see if they can help you and take this into consideration before you decide what to do. And mom's that are looking at in-home care for your child, I would ask for proof of liability insurance from the owner to make sure they are covered in the event that something unexpected happens to your child.
