Looking for Advice to Get Rid of Chronic Sinus Infections...

Numerous of doctor's visits, medications and antibiotics. Still having low grade fevers off and on, headaches, sinus pressure. Taking Allegra D and Astylin Nose spray. I also bought a NETIPOT. I use it several times a week. My nose is clear. I am very tired and ready for a nap almost every day. I stopped drinking regular milk and now on soy because I figured out I was lactose intolerant. Made a big difference. My doctor will not recommend for me to see a Ear, Nose and Throat doctor or an Allergist. I am very frustrated. I live in the North FW/Keller area. Can anyone recommend something, anything, I am desparate.

What can I do next?

You should do your neti pot everyday. Also, you should take probiotics since you were on antibiotics to add back healthy bacteria. It sounds crazy, but stuff in your gut can impact sinuses. One cause of sinus problems that they've recently discovered is H. Pylori and another is fungal infections. The latter makes the most sense because the antibiotics allow the fungal stuff to go to town. I almost always need anti-fungals after having been on antibiotics. You should ask your doctor about that. Fungal infections can be far worse than the sinus infections and cause the type of fatigue you mention. There are herbal/natural anti-fungals out there. One of my favorite brands is the one from Garden of Life (Fungal Defense) - it's not cheap, but it works well. Also, note that soy is another potential allergen, so you might want to switch to rice milk, until you resolve the issue. I also wouldn't entirely rule out a true dairy allergy rather than just lactose intolerance. I thought I was lactose intolerant when I was 32, only to learn 10 years later that I had a true dairy allergy.

I am in Keller also. I suffered so bad after going to Jamaica that I was sick for two weeks. All the Dr's wanted to do was to give me more medicine, and I still felt horrible. I went to see who I call the "herb guy" in Carrollton and boy was he worth it. I felt better the very next day. My ears had been hurting for weeks because of the fluid. If you are interested in seeing him, I'll have to look up his name and number. I continue to take the herbs when I start to get a sinus infection and am better much faster. The girls at work stay sick for weeks and I kick it in a matter of days:)

Hello B.,

Here are a few more suggestions.

~golden seal~ is great for the sinuses.

~aniseed~ (bulk spice section @ sprouts) helps w/ mucus
you can make a nice soothing tea. I just love it. it's good for the stomach too.

~fenugreek is also a good expectorant

~echinacea~builds immune system --caution, it is a RAGWEED
--echinacea & chamomile are in the ragweed family.
And so is lettuce, sunflower and safflower.

~astragalus~ builds immune system (good alternative for people allergic to ragweeds

~onions & honey~ (the smell alone cures just about anything instantly --at least that's what my kids say so they don't have to take it!!!) Seriously, grate some onion, add honey, put it in a jar (w/ lid) in the fridge, let it sit for a couple of hours and drink a table spoon 3xday

~omega 3 oils~

~probiotics~

~lots of water!~

~stay away from milk~
~lemonade~ does wonders for my son's sinuses! he needs 75% less sinus medication since milk is "almost" eliminated from his diet.

Get to an allergist. so many things can affect you. Tell your doctor that you NEED to be tested for allergies and that you need a referal. otherwise perhaps it's time to find a new doctor. I found out not too long ago that I'm allergic to ragweed...and poor me ...I was trying to eat healthier and eating lots and lots of lettuce!

Good luck!

I have never used a neti pot (I'm scared of that one), but the other things mentioned are familiar to me and I have used most of them. Another thing I do is to eat a bit of horseradish root. Boy will it open you up and get things moving. If you try this, be sure to chew with your mouth closed and breathe through your nose while chewing it. Some say that you have to swallow it for it to "really" work. All I can say is that if not swallowing it makes it only "sort of" work, I am good with that. I can chew a bit of it and wake up the next day and still be clear. If I don't take it, I am stopped up every morning. It is best (based on my experience) to get organic root as it seems to be more potent and works better. It is all horrible tasting (to me anyway) but so worth the relief of being able to breathe and not be so tired from not being able to breathe.

I hope you find something out of all of our advice that works for you. Good luck.

I'd use the netipot every day regardless of whether you feel clear or not.

Instead of Astelyin try Nasonex... and maybe Zyrtec instead of Allegra D. I don't do any D... I do plain allergy meds and if I need it I do Sudafed.

I'm sorry your healthcare requires your doc to refer you...

Stay away from antibiotics. Try taking a supplement from Sprouts or similar store to boost your immune system. I took Primal Defense. It's not cheap but I think it helped. Or Juice Plus, but that too is expensive.

And eat yogurt. You need to get your system back on track.

Try doing the Daniel Diet to clean out your body and make it stronger (you know it's not really a diet, but some people call it that). If you google it you can find a bunch of diets on line. Basically, real food, no sugar, no meat... my favorite "Daniel Diet" meal is black beans, brown rice and an okra/tomatoe/squash mix. Plenty of hot sauce.

I used to have chronic sinus issues, but now I do not. Sometimes I have a cold or allergy attack, but no antibiotics and I get better and don't get sick 4 weeks later, like I used to do.

Good luck to you.
