Looking for Advice!

I have several friends who are having babies soon and I would like to make them a baby carrier of some sort. I have made/used slings with my daughter, but have seen the moby and sleepy wraps too! I think the wraps look a little more comfy, I never was very comfy using the slings. So just wondering what other moms like!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ladies thank you for all your advice. I think I have decided to make my friends some Moby type wraps. I have been looking up stuff on the internet and found some really good sites for tying the wraps an have tried it myself. Thanks again for all of your help

I loved my Moby and made 2 more myself. Super comfy for mama & baby. You don't even have to sew if you get a knit that "rolls" on the edges. 5-6 yards, cut down the middle makes 2 great wraps for half the price of one Moby. Pouches are also very easy to make but take much more effort to make sure they are the right size for the mama.

I love, love, love our Ergo.

Also, we use a Storchenweige wrap. I like the material - doesn't sag, etc. Plus, it comes with a dvd that shows how to tie a bunch of different ways to carry the baby, and at different ages.

Have fun!

I really like the New Native baby carrier. It can be a little awkward for a newborn, but at 2 months my son now does very well in it, so that's how I carry him in the store, since I also have a 20-month-old I must chase around. A bonus is that you can put the baby in a car seat while still in the sling if the baby has fallen asleep; that's come in handy a few times. It seems a pretty simple design if you're able to figure out patterns from sight, but it does require an accurate measurement of the mother.

I think it would be best if your friend got started with a moby-type wrap, simply because it is easiest to get a tiny tiny baby comfortably on in one of those, most of the time. But that's so easy to make that you might want to make her one of the ones that take a little more time, which she might LOOVE using as well. I used to always wear my tiny guy in a Mei Tai, so part of it just depends on the person. Here's a great link to a complete do it yourself instructions page:

(And it says you agree that by using one of the patterns you will be making a carrier for personal use only...obviously making it for a gift counts...she just doesn't want people to make HER designs and then SELL them.)
Good luck! I think it's awesome that you're going to provide a friend with such a great easy resource! =)

A., Here is my friends website, http://babywearingdoula.com/
She is here in OKC, if you ever get a chance to attend her babywearing class, she has one a month. She can explain the different soft carriers, wraps, slings, mei tai's etc. Hope this helps. My favorite was Mei Tai's.
