Hi Moms,

I am looking for a recommendation for a sunscreen that is very gentle for super sensitive baby skin. I just tried a sunscreen that advertised 'hypoallergenic' and my little one's skin reacted terribly to it :(

Thanks!

Kinesys Kids is the best. My son has very sensitive, eczema prone skin and this has not irritated him at all. You can get it at www.swimoutlet.com.

From what I have read, the sunscreens with a physical block (titanium dioxide or zinc oxide) are much less likely to cause reactions that those with chemical blocks. Neutrogena has a new line that we like, and another is Blue Lizard (Baby or Sensitive).

The California Baby brand makes sunscreen for sensitive babies (and adults). It's expensive stuff but it's also one of the few brands that are 100% pure and natural. Baby products are not regulated by the FDA and alot of them - even the ones that are supposedly natural or for sensitive skin - have added chemicals (some of which are really bad like fourmaldehyde). A really great website to find out what's truly in baby and adult skin care products is www.cosmeticsdatabase.com - you can type in the brand name of any product and it will tell you what potentially harmful chemicals are in it and rates the potential risk of the product.

I love this stuff by Kinesys here's a link to their website.

I have several friends with kids who have super sensitive skin and they have had good luck with it too. I don't use it on my kids faces though, I like a stick for that which is found here on www.diapers.com ...
http://www.diapers.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?product...
A good resource for things like this is the EWG's cosmetic database... http://www.cosmeticdatabase.com/index.php?nothanks=1
This database rates products based on their ingredients and whether they are toxic...
good luck

Oddly, my son always had TERRIBLE reactions to hypoallergenic baby stuff... from wipes to sunscreen to soaps, whathaveyou. Yet, he's fine with straight non-hypoallergenic stuff. If you're daughter reacts bad to both...here are a couple red head in hawaii and red head in egypt tricks:

1) A rashguard & a hat . Here's a couple links. There are probably thousands. Don't waste your money buying special sunscreen shirts. A rashguard is spf 50+, as are most forms of clothing. You could probably have luck at old navy or target, as well as any major surf shop.

2) A loose cotton or linen button up shirt. Think pirate loose. The swirly loose fabric keeps them cool as the sweat evaporates, the fabric in and of itself keeps the sun off.

3) Skin cancer sunscreen. Your doc will know the brand.

Jennifer,

If you aren't familiar with it already, I would check out www.cosmeticsdatabase.com It's a website that breaksdown products, including baby products, into their ingredients and rates them based on their "risk" to the body. It's not set up to tell you exactly which ones are best for sensitive skin, but you can hopefully find one that has fewer chemicals/additives in it. I imagine that would be a good place to start.

Good luck.

Check for PABA as an ingredient. I never used sunscreen because I always burned and then I realized I was reacting to the PABA so now if I use sunscreen it is PABA free.

California Baby is supposed to be great and good for sensitive skin, but I've never used their sunscreen. Badger is awesome and smells really good to me. We also use Aveeno fragrance free for our daughter as a backup when we forget to use the Badger. I like the Badger much better than the Aveeno because it's safer, but if it's put on too thick or too soon before going in the sun, it does get a bit oily. It's a great sunscreen though and we used it on our very fair 6th month old last winter when we went to Hawaii. She never burned even with being outside a whole lot. Wide brimmed hats, and spf clothing are always good choices that aren't likely to cause a skin reaction in your child. You can find Badger at Whole Foods or most natural foods stores as well as possibly at the local hospital gift shop.

My advise to you is see a baby skin doctor the reson I
say this is my grandson has sensitive skin we can't even
use soap & if we do it has to be very little he has a
skin condition & his skin reacts different to lotions & stuff so I would see a Doctor I'm sure they could recomend
a sunscreen that would be safe for all.

I am a consultant with Arbonne International. We have a wonderful sunscreen in our baby care line (Arbonne Baby Care-ABC).
It doesn't surprise me that your little one reacted to a "hypoallergenic" product; my daughter reacted to many. "Hypoallergenic" is a term that is loosely thrown around but the FDA actually allows a product to be labeled that way when as many as 40% of the population reacts to it. It's <50% so it's "hypo."
If you would like more information on the Arbonne Baby Care line, go to my webpage at www.nursekerry.myarbonne.com.

California Babies is awesome! I highly recommend it. I ordered mine from www.diapers.com but sometimes they carry it at some drugstores too. It is chemical free and PABA free, and for sensitive skin. Plus, it is waterproof. Hope this helps!

I use Jason's kids sunscreen - I think it's Jason's Sunbrella or something along those lines. It doesn't have any parabens or other bad stuff. Its sold at Whole Foods, etc. yet is not very expensive. Weleda is good too but pretty expensive.

Cosmeticdatabase.com has information on toxic contents of all sorts of toiletries and cosmetics, including sunscreen. I know that "Mexitan" is the only sunscreen allowed in certain tourist attractions on the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico because it is biodegradable and environmentally safe. I looked it up on the database and it scored a 1 on a scale of 0 to 10 for toxicity with 0 being the best possible score. I use this for our toddler, but you can only get it online. Mexitan is based on a formula originally used by natives in Acapulco and it also contains green tea which has antioxidants which are good for the skin.

Also, if skin sensitivity is an issue, you can use clothing that covers such as wide brim hats, rash guard clothing, long sleeves, etc. If you avoid the intense sunlight hours between 10a and 4p, a little sunlight doesn't hurt as children need vitamin D for stronger bones and vit D also helps prevent some cancers. However, if you have a baby that is less than one year of age, keep him or her out of direct sunlight. Hope this helps.

I'm still looking for a sunscreen that I'm not allergic to. I get a horrible rash on my face! I've got it down to these ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, and Oxybenzone. I can't find anything that doesn't have one of those in it. Even the Aveeno Baby has that stuff in it. Once I get the rash it takes a week for it to heal.
I've heard that Skin-So-Soft is a good one, that is an Avon product. I always used that on my kids but, they don't seem to have a problem with any products.
Good luck!
