Hi - I have a 7 week old baby and have been switched to a formula for milk protien sensitivity and/or allergy... I was interested in talking to other moms who've been through this AND finding out if there's a pediatric allergist in this area to confirm this... we wonder if our little guy just has a bad case of GERD which he's also being treated for or if it's truely BOTH issues at hand. Please respond - I'm loosing my mind here trying to give my baby the best formula. I could kick myself for not breastfeeding at this point, but my Ped. advised me that milk sensitivity can be passed that way as well... hindsight is 20/20 though. Thanks - Anxious Mommy of Sweet Baby Boy!

Both of my children, now 6 and 5, suffered from milk allergy. Both were put on Pregestimil by Dr. Houck (in C.) a pediatric gastrointernologist (sp?). When my oldest turned 1 we took him to the allergist to see if he had outgrown the milk allergy and they did a blood test which showed he had. Same went for my daughter when she turned 1.

Their symptoms were not just the reflux, but projectile vomiting after every bottle and blood in their stools. There were so sensitive to the allergy at the time, breast milk contained it as well. Because of all this both had low weight percentages for their ages. I am happy to report after we made it through that first year, I have healthy, active children who are able to drink milk every day w/their breakfast. My son has had different food allergies over the years (strawberries, red dye in baby tylenol, can't remember all) but we always kept benedryl on hand even in the diaper bag in case of emergency. He would break out in hives w/other food allergies. He outgrew all these by about 4 yrs.

Hi Sarah,
I too had this problem with my daughter. We went to several specialists and then she just got to the age where she grew out of the problem. I hope you don't have to go through all what we had to go through. My daughter had to have two upper GI's where both persons examing the scope thought they saw a stricture (she was an extremely spitty baby). Dr. Hauck the upper GI specialist did not see this and since she was so fat just prescribe Zantac (I think) to help with the spitting up. We also went to allergists to see what she was allergic to. They were great to work with as she was on a nebulizer due to congestion and allergies, possibly due to formula but to this day, unknown. The first doctor we went to in C. was Dr. Ashe, Asthma and Allergy Specialists in C.. He is great with kids, great to talk to about these issues and referred us to the gastro doctor as well. The gastro doctor was Dr. Hauck. They performed a test to find out what she was allergic too. Another good allergist is in Morrisville because we moved and I needed something to closer to where I was living at the time. We went to another really good doctor, Dr. Norris. I will send you all of the addresses and phone numbers. Best wishes to you!

Hello,

We took my 18 mo old daughter to Asthma & Allergy Specialists ###-###-####)in the Arboretum area at Providence Rd & Hwy 51. They are not specifically a Pediatric Allergist, but we were referred by our Pediatrician and there were lots of kids there. I found the Dr and nurses to be very good with a scared baby. They did the full testing on her back. (It's not like the test years ago. The scratch test is over in 3 seconds and my daughter hardley noticed.) She ended up being allergic to peanuts.
Hope you find a good Dr and get some answers.
Good luck,
T.

I breastfed my son and still ended up on medication because he kept waking up screaming with stomach pain. I think it was zantac, but I'm not sure. We tried a number of things but he mostly had to outgrow it. He got over it eventually, but there were many sleepless nights and lots of mylicon. For a while it seemed like everyone I talked to was going through the same thing no matter what their children were fed. Hang in there, it gets better!
