Hi Everyone,

I'm in search of a new Psychiatrist. I'm sick of feeling the way I do. I contribute most of this to my meds. not working and my current doctor. I was first diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder 13 years ago as a teen. Although, as a teen I was able to make a complete recovery. My depression resurfaced with the birth of my son almost four years ago. I've seen eight doctors, been tried on almost 25 different medications, and voluntarily hospitalized myself over the past 4 years. Nothing seems to be helping! Is there some highly renown Psychiatrist out there that may finally be able to help me?

Thanks,
J.

Have you ruled out Vitamin B12 deficiency? Serum (blood) B12 level should be at 1000 (can give false negative results and false positive results). The other B12 test is the urinary methylmalonic acid (uMMA) - this is more reliable and should be used in conjuction of the blood test. The uMMA levels should be below 5.0.

These are simple, low cost (free with insurance) tests that you can get done. The uMMA can be done from the comfort of your own home - just call Norman Clinical Laboratory 1-800-397-7408 and ask them to mail you a test kit.

Hey J.. When I first read your letter my first thought was that you have already answered your own question. Many may respond to your letter with names and numbers of psyc doctors but I feel they are the problem. Psychaitrist only attempt to diagnose problems and only offer pharmasudical solutions, which in turn causes more intense and psycological problems due to serious side effects which can lead to suicide or death. Now isn't that ironic: how a drug used to treat depression has side effects that may cause worsening depression and thoughts of suicide? My opinion and solution to your situation, is spiritual cleansing. What I mean by that is taking exercises such as yoga or meditation. This method has nothing to do with religion but it helps you find and maintain inner peace. That spiritual balance will allow you to be calm, lowers your blood pressure and relieves stress through out the body. Find something that you enjoy doing such as reading, writing, gardening, music, and find your focal point. If you dont have a hobbie, then find one. You would be suprised how much tension and stress relief you can get from enjoying a hobbie or meditation. Now I'm not one to impose religion on anyone but just a thought: maybe try going to church and speaking with a christian or religious councelor. Many have found joy, relief and comfort from doing so. For me Ive suffured through depression most of my life, mostly hormonal, but I find great peace and less stress fom having done some of the things Ive mentioned previously. Now for the harsh reality: Depression will never completely leave you. You will experience it from time to time but you'll have the tools to get through it without the harmful effects of medications. You will even notice your symptoms before it consumes you and you will know some techniques that work to relieve your symptoms. Finally, change your diet. Foods that we eat to comfort our depression is making us worse. Try foods thats high in anti oxidants and rich in folic acid. Supplement your diet with Vitamins such as B12 and E as well as Omega3. You be will suprised how differently your mood changes for the better. I hope everything works out for you and your beautiful family, love yourself because you are awesome!

You might try a totally different route. There is a group of chiropractor/clinical nutritionists in Grosse Pointe who deal with alot of different issues. They believe your system is bombarded with toxins constantly and if your nutrition isn't correct any number of things can happen, physically and mentally. Go to www.ahccenter.com and read about them. It would be well worth investigating. Your diet and nutrition have everything to do with your brain function. All the best to you!!

I don't know where you live but I see a Psychiatrist she is at 15 and garfield her name is Diane Gill and she is really good. I refuse medicine and she helps me. My reason for refusal is I don't like the way they make you feel and had a very close fried commit suicide on meds for depression and I put the blame on the drugs. You necessarially don't have to have depression you may have a chemical inbalance. That can make you feel anxious and depressed. The name of the practice diane is at is oakland physcology clinic ###-###-#### the one I see is diane Gill
