Hi K.!
I try to read before bed, too. I am run the gamet on what genre I read but one of my favorite authors is Janet Evanovich. Laugh out loud funny and a quick read with good characters and plot development. Great question and if anyone would want to do a book club, count me in.
Happy reading!

The Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella. Very funny books, and I hear they're making a movie of the first one. If you like romance novels I could tell you bunches. Just send me a note. I love reading it's my addiction. I like to read fun books though, not serious ones. Reading is my entertainment.

How timely! The Lynn University newsletter just published a recommended reading list:

Librarian Offers Up List of Top 10 Beach Books
List runs from Grisham to Gilbert; Harry Potter to 'Beautiful Boy'

Published Thursday, April 10, 2008 12:45 pm
by Jason Hughes

Susan Montgomery, an avid book reader and Lynn Library's circulation desk manager, has devised a top 10 list of this summer's must-read books.

"Working in a library has many perks - one is meeting other book lovers," said Montgomery. "I often have the opportunity to talk with patrons about their choices. Recently, these books have been hot topics at Lynn Library."

Using book selections from Lynn's book club, personal preferences and research, Montgomery's list covers a variety of genres from fantasy and romance to travel and history.

Montgomery's top 10 summer reading list includes:

1. "Eat, Pray, Love: One woman's search for everything across Italy, India, Indonesia" by Elizabeth Gilbert - a romantic, fictitious travelogue of a recently divorced woman who divides her year among three dissimilar countries

2. "The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America" by Erik Larson - a novel centered around events from the infamous 1893 Chicago World's Fair

3. "The Appeal" by John Grisham - Grisham's thirteenth legal thriller surrounding the story of a small Mississippi law firm who wins a big verdict over a chemical giant, Krane

4. "A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail" by Bill Bryson - Bryson serves as a tour guide, taking readers through the history and ecology of the Appalachian Trail that stretches from Georgia to Maine and introducing them to the people and bears he encounters on the trail

5. "In the Time of Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez - a novel about courage and sisterhood set in the Dominican Republic during the rise of the Trujillo dictatorship

6. "Change of Heart" by Jodi Piccoult - a novel that examines a condemned inmate's desire to be an organ donor

7. "Water for Elephants: A Novel" by Sara Gruen - a novel, set in the early years of the Great Depression and centered around a young boy, now 90 years old, who grew up in the circus

8. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" by JK Rowling - this is book seven, the conclusion to Rowling's renowned Harry Potter series

9. "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini - author of the New York Times bestseller "The Kite Runner," Hosseini records 30 years of Afghan history in a story of family, friendship, faith and the salvation to be found in love

10. "Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Meth Addiction" by David Sheff - a novel depicting a teenager's addiction from the parent's point of view

My particular favorite is "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck, my nomination for the Great American Novel.

If you're open to Science Fiction fantasy, I recommend Sharon Lee and steve Miller as writers . One series starts with the book "Conflict of Honors" or you could buy the three in one book(starting with the same story) titled "Partners in Necessity" They been compared to Georgette Heyer crossed with James Bond. complex plotting, romance, adventure, and superb world building. The first time I opened the book, I put it down what I thought was an hour later, to find that five hours had fled.

Someone else mentioned "The Other Boleyn Girl" I believe it to be a fun read, but *nothing* that Phillipa Gregory has written is Historically accurate. Every one of her novels takes liberties with the facts, and I refuse to buy them because of that. (I don't judge blindly: I have studied the history in depth with annotated and researched texts, and I borrowed the book to read, so I wouldn't be lashing out without knowing. I work as a professional reenactor for a renaissance faire set in Tudor times and dedicated to having accurate info)

Basically, if you like them, go ahead and read them, but don't take it as the true story. A lot of it is made up, and a lot of it is factually wrong. That bugs me when it comes to historical characters. YMMV

What an awesome question! I would be interested in what people have to say.

SMOKE JUMPER is one of my all time favorite books but beware that you won't be able to put it down and will end up reading into the wee hours of the morning! The Loop is also a good one by the same author (I can't recall the author right now!) but not as incredible as Smoke Jumper. Also, Beach Music by Pat Conroy is a must read.
Hope you enjoy!

Hi K., I know you will probably get about a hundred respones to this e-mail. But, if you have a chance I would recommend a book called BEACH MUSIC by Pat Conroy. It is my favorite book of all time. Its not new, about 10 years old, at least, so it should be in paperback. It's about a man from a disfunctional family, now living in Italy after his wife dies. He decides to go back to his family in the Carolina's after he receives a distress call. ENJOY

Hi K.-
What a great question! I had fun reading through your responses. My recommendation for you is THE MISTS OF AVALON by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It tells the familiar tale of King Arthur, but from the perspective of the female characters. FABULOUS book! I remember a stranger stopping me many years ago while reading it, telling me that she envied me because I was reading it for the first time. I know what she meant once I finished it! Two other favorites of mine are WHITE OLEANDER and THE ENGLISH PATIENT, but if you've seen the movies then it may not be quite the same. Best of luck in your search, and happy reading!
