Hi all,

I am looking for a good alternative to cows milk. One of my daughters( 5 yrs old) also has a slight allergy to Soy, so I guess I would be looking for a good tasting Rice Milk.

Any suggestions?

My daughter is allergic to dairy and doesn't seem to tolerate soy well either, so I've been giving her Rice Dream Enriched rice milk. She drinks it every day; she also likes it in cereal and in oatmeal. The Rice Dream brand is a bit pricy (it usually runs about $3.50 for a 32-ounce carton), although I did find a comparable product at Trader Joe's for a lot less.

My kids like the Rice Dream milk in the refrigerator section, not the one on the shelf, tastes much better. Also, I was talking to this owner of health food store and he was telling me that Almond milk is much more like cows milk in nutritional value, as well as taste and texture. I don't know if this is true, but I was going to do some research on it.

We buy either the Trader Joes or Whole Foods brand rice milk (either regular or vanilla) and they taste pretty good, are fairly inexpensive, and are fortified. They also work well in recipes and taste good with oatmeal, dry cereal, etc. Almond milk would be another alternative. All the brands I've tried are fortified so that's not really an issue. Absolutely no need for us to drink cow's milk.

Another good alternative is almond milk :) More protein than rice milk.

I can't tolerate cow's milk or soy, and my favorite rice milk is made by WestSoy. Both plain and vanilla are fine. I find that the Rice Dream brand is a bit chalky.

I've also enjoyed Whole Foods brand and Wild Oats brand, but they tend to be a little sweet.

Good Luck.

I use Rice Dream ricemilk and have been usingit for 8 yrs. Both of my kids drink it and never drink cows milk. No one inour house drinks cows milk. Rice dream has the same calcium, etc. as regular cows milk. Rice milk is much easier on the stomache and is white where as soy is brownish and my kids won't drink that. YOu can find Rice Dream at Target and most Jewels. I buy the original, there is also vanilla, but is too sweet for me.

I've actually done some research on this and from what I've been told (from a qualified nutritionist) is that a low fat organic/ hormone free milk is an overall better choice than rice milk.

Though unless your family are strict vegetarian, then maybe Rice Dream would be an alternative? I would definitely opt for a vitamin fortified substitute though.

During my vegetarian years I used Imagine Rice milk and I still prefer it. I always got the Vanilla and then don't have to add sugar to my cereal. It has vitamin D added and actually better for you than whole milk anyway.

My daughter was having trouble with milk and she suggested giving her Lactaid. Definitely worth asking the doctor about it and looking at the ingredients and nutrients.
