Looking for a Good Gift Idea for a Little Boy Who Will Soon Be an Older Brother

My friend's little boy is 3 1/2 years old and very used to having all the attention. Mom is trying to find ways of really including him and making him see his new role as big brother special. She is having a babyshower and we want to give the older brother a gift. I have seen some "older Brother" books but has anyone done anything different?

What can I do next?

Get him his own baby doll with some of the accessories. I know, I know...girl stuff. Having worked in daycare, I can attest to the fact that boys like playing with the dolls too. Think of it as beginning preparation for when he one day becomes a dad himself. Make a bed out of a box and tea towel. Bib, diaper, bottle, spoon and cup... he will see Mom and Dad using these things on Baby. Let him have his own such items to mimic with. It will help him to be part of the new goings on... and eventually to 'help' with his own real sibling.

Hi A.. When a friend of mine had her second, I gave her a basket of little things - the big brother received a book that he could "read" to the new baby. It was a board book with simple pictures the little boy could tell the new baby what they were. I also gave her a CD of kids music for the big brother to put on for the little brother to listen to, and he enjoy in the process. A video for the big brother to watch when mom had to give the baby attention. A small diaper bag that the big brother could carry for his toys and some baby things. I lined the basket with a new blanket for the baby and the little items for the big brother were wrapped in the babies washcloths and towels, tied with ribbon.

Hope this helps.

If you do go for the book, I highly reccommend Joanns Cole's I am a Big Brother; there's another book called Don't Wake the Baby that's fun.

I don't have a specific reccomendation for a gift for him other than a book, but get him a special toy that's just for him and make a big deal out of how special he is and what a big boy he is, and how much you love him... My son was 2 1/2 and handled the arrival of his litle sister very well; it wasn't until she started taking his stuff that it became difficult.

My cousin went to the dollar store and picked up some things her older child would like for everytime someone brought something for the baby - that way she wouldn't be jealous that only the baby got presents.

Also, books and t-shirts are a great idea. Also a camera might be fun for the older child. I know that fisher price has one but its a little spendy, you could just get some disposables and let the child take some pictures of the baby or whatever and then have them developed for them.

We gave my two and a half year old a "big boy" present that he had been wanting when his sister was born, but we waited for her to be born and gave it to him from her. We gave him an easel, because he really wanted one, but anything he is really into that is more grown up and definitely not for baby would work. We also gave him a I'm the big brother shirt to wear to the hospital, and all the nurses were teriffic with him and showed him all kinds of attention which was great. It was still a rough transition for him, but after a couple of weeks he was fine. We had some more tough times when she got mobile, but again, within a couple of weeks, he was fine again. The most important part is to give him some one on one every day so he doesn't feel displaced by the new baby.

the best thing your friend can do is has him in the birthing room and letting him hold his little brother after hes cleaned up let him be the first I have done that will all of my children and it has worked out wonderful and I have also seen where the parents don't have the older ones until a day or two come in because they were at a babysitter and they fight because there jealous of one another
Good luck and God Bless

Hi A.,
My son was 2 years 10 months when my daughter was born. We had a present for him at the hospital when he came to see his new sister. We made it like it was from her. It had a Big Brother T-shirt, a Big Brother book, & some of his favorite things in it. Tractors, trucks etc... Hope this helps!

Like a few of the other moms have said, the "I'm the Big Brother" shirt is always a hit, with the matching "I'm the Little Brother/Sister" onesie. A friend of mine bought these for my daughters, and when my almost-3 year old came to the hospital to meet her new baby sister, she was SO PROUD to have everyone see she was the big sister! She stopped to tell every nurse she saw along the way, "Guess who I am? I'm Isabelle's big sister!" And then when she saw her baby sister in the matching Little Sister onesie, she was thrilled. Also we found a tiny version of my older daughter's "lovey" stuffed animal, and she gave that to her baby sister as her first toy. We had bought her the "What to expect when Mom brings the new baby home" book, but I don't think it really helped. She really didn't have any clue what to expect even though we read the book every day.
