Ok..this could get long...so please bear with me. My son who is now 17 was diagnose with ADD when he was in 4th grade. He was on meds. until the 9th grade and decided he no longer wanted to take them. Well..high school has been awful. He is now 17 and failing most of his classes. He also has signs of a sensory disorder. Soooo I decided to take him to our pediatrician ...OMG!!!!! BIG MISTAKE!!!! He berated me...told me if I just displined him or if I put a tent in the back yard and had him live out there or sent him to the military that he just might shape up. Also told my son that if he didn't get off his a$$ (yes..he used those words) that he would never get a decent job. OMG..it was HORRIBLE...he was a TOTAL JERK of a doctor. Alot of other things were said to but this would be a book! He really surprised me by the way he acted because we had seen him for other issues and he had been fine. Anyway...long story short..I spoke to him on the phone a few days later to let him know how upset I was that he berated me and really upset my son, and didn't listen to a word I said. He said...I could tell your son didn't give a SH** about being in my office (yes those were his words.) and so on. I finally had had enough of his attitude...told him off and hung up on him. :) Well...a few days later I get a certified letter. I was a letter telling me that I am no longer welcome in his office and I need to find another doctor....NOT A PROBLEM...ROFL. BTW...if any of you care....this is Dr. Zimmerman at Hilltop Family Phyicians in Parker :) Do NOT go to him if your child has ADD/ADHD. (I wouldn't go to him now reguardless of what was wrong! You will get NO WHERE. Now my son is seeing a psychologist and he agrees that he needs to see a dr. about going on some meds. Is there anyone out there that has a child with ADD/ADHD that has a wonderful doctor that they can refer me to. I am NOT up for another Dr. like Zimmerman! After telling the psychologist about how I was treating by him he said I should report him. Not sure I am up for that. I just want help for my son. So if anyone has a doctor out there that they take their child to for ADD/ADHD issues and LOVE them...Please let me know.

Thanks so much!

J.

Try Dr. Murray Caplan at Child First Pediatrics in Centennial. Check out their website at www.childfirstpediatrics.com. His specialty is ADHD. My son used to go to him many years ago when he was first diagnosed with ADHD (he's since been also diagnosed with autism and some sensory stuff). We switched away from Dr. Caplan because they were a bit far for us and my son had other issues besides ADHD which were better served with a regular pediatrician and a monthly visit with a psychiatrist as well as some OT and Speech Therapy. But if it's just an ADHD issue and maybe sensory issues, Dr. Caplan knows his stuff. He may be a bit far for you, but it's worth a look. Your last pediatrician should be officially reprimanded for his behavior, just totally unacceptable!

I'm not sure if you're trying to elicit sympathy for allowing your son to quit taking his meds in 9th grade & then seeing his downward slide into failing classes?? Your doctor was out of line but at least someone said something to you that was honest. Find a good doctor, listen to their advice, discipline your son, and allow him to become a productive citizen.

I go to Dr Kurtz with advanced pediatrics. They are out of Aurora and Parker. He has helped us tremendously. Our son was suicidal and going down hill in school and we took him to Dr Kurtz and he gave me the papers to interview teachers and diagnosed him with ADHD and we have him on low dose meds and cannot believe we waited this long. Try him he is awsome. He was my husbands(38) Dr when he was a child. P.S. our son is only 6.

I go to a great family physician in Parker...Dr. Laura Makaroff. She's young, smart and she listens. I don't have any issues with ADD, but I think you would really like her and she is available anytime you have a question, she has been very patient with my "new mom" anxiety. Her office is located just off E470 by Parker Adventist hospital.

Hi J.:
I'm only just reading your email, it's been 2 years since you posted it. But, I just wanted to share my story with you. My son was diagnosed with ADHD through the Child Study Center by Dr. Steven Kurtz. HE IS THE BEST! He's extraordinary! If you google him, you'll find many articles he has written. I took my son to see him 5 years ago and he put us on the right track. My son is now 11 years old, is on focalin 10 mg only when he goes to school. Anyway, it's time to see Dr. Kurtz again, I feel the medication isn't working as well as it should and possibly he needs something different. As with everything these days, going to Dr. Kurtz is not covered by my medical insurance. A big pain in my A*&! I'm going to try and change my plan to see if I can get coverage. Money is always a problem. Let me know how your son is doing! What doctor did you end up going to see? Hope to hear from you soon. S.

My son has ADHD and we see a psychiatrist. I would not ever have a pediatrian do meds for a psychiatric disorder. Dr. Sakamoto is at I25 and Iliff (just near Colorado Blvd), He knows his meds, which is what you want in a doc for your son. his # is ###-###-####. He will do an intake on your son but you need to have your mind made up that he does need meds. A psychiatrist will match the drug to your son, knowing it might take a few attempts to get right combo going. I feel he is up to date, has lots of afterschool and evening appts. Keep hope alive- our son had immediate results and life for everyone is sooo much better.

Good luck
M
