Looking for a Credit Union

Hi moms. I want to move our accounts to a credit union. I've heard that they are customer friendly, have better rates, and don't charge high fees for every little thing. Can any of you recommend a credit union? I live in Little Elm near Frisco and work in North Dallas. I would like something that is not too far out of reach (ATMs, etc). Sorry, this is a compound question... has anyone tried ING or an online bank?

Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much everyone!! I am opening my new account this weekend. I looked at all of the suggestions but found that I wasn't qualified to join all of them because of the county I live in, employer, etc.

I'm a member and really love Neighborhood Credit Union. They're located on Montfort between Spring Valley and Beltline. They have other locations as well and they also have "sister" credit unions that you can use for free transactions. Hope this helps.

TEXANS CREDIT UNION is near you and we have been members since I was a baby. (30 years). Their HIGH-Rate checking is my fav because it gives us 3.5-4% for any balance from $1 up to $25,000. You just have to have 1 direct deposit a month and 15 debit purchases. They have sister branches you can use too which expands the locations. We got over $600 in INTEREST in 2009 from balances below 10k a month.

I agree with Jeanne & Patricia 100%. DATCU is the best! We left Wells Fargo a few years ago and went to DATCU and there is a huge difference. They are much more customer friendly. We love it!

I have had ING for savings for several years and have been very pleased with it. I haven't used it for checking primarily because the ATM locations are not as convenient for me as Bank of America.

DATCU Credit Union has been in business since 1936 and is one of the BEST in the area. There are several in your area (The Colony, Aubrey, 3 in Denton, Lewisville, etc.) that would probably be on your way anywhere. Highly recommend it!

There is a group called Move Your Money that is encouraging people to switch to community banks and credit unions. There is a link on their site that helps you locate banks and credit unions in your area that are stable. Here is the link:

Hi L.,

I LOVE my CU and will probably never change...I have been with Delta Community Credit Union (formerly Delta Employees Credit Union)for ten years now; https://www.deltacommunitycu.com/index.asp. Anyone can join. There are no fees whatsoever for general account usage!! In fact, they pay you to be a member with dividends not just on savings accounts, but also with your checking account. They do have a local branch in Southlake, but there are also many share branches you can use in the area with out penalty. My husband has actually never been into our bank. They also have online check deposits...not just with paychecks, but actual checks written out to you from others. Let's say it is 9:00 PM on a Sunday night and I go online to deposit a $1000 check, all I do is type in the check number and amount and a deposit slip is generated and the $1000 I just deposited is INSTANTLY available to use, all I have to do is mail the check to the credit union within 10 days. Once it is received they will send you an email to let you know.

Also, for every purchase you make with your check card you receive two points, which you can use to get cash back or gift cards from lots of different vendors. So in other words you get paid back for using your own money (similar to credit cards, without the debt).

They are excellent against fraud protection!! I had my check card number stolen once and my husband two times (later we discovered local merchants copying our numbers). Delta notified us immediately of the unusual activity and put holds on the purchases, we never had to pay a dime.

Best of luck with your decision!!

I use Delta Community Credit Union, and we LOVE them but they are in Southlake which is a bit far for you, but I will say DO NOT use EECU, we have an account there also and they are terrible... good luck!

We've had good experience with ING Orange Banking. I suppose the interest rate is a little better than the mega-banks, but you have to operate within their limitations - meaning, that your requests for transfers and withdrawls take 3 or 4 days to process.
