Looking for a Church Home

I am looking for a church in Garland for me and my children to attend that has an excellent youth program with lots of activities and most importantly other kids that are friendly and have a relationship with Christ. I don't really like the "preaching" style as much as the "teaching" style, if that makes any sense. I have always attended mostly pentecostal churches and assemblies of god, but right now I just want a good Christian church that teaches the Bible and has good, non-judgmental people. It is important that they have a good youth program for teens, since I have three teenagers. I'm hoping that the kids in the church will make my kids feel very welcome and include them in activities outside the church, also. If this sounds like your church...please let me know. I'm very frustrated not knowing where to go right now.

What can I do next?

Hi T.,

Concordia in Garland is great Church that I think your family would be a perfect fit for!

We have a wonderful Youth Minister and lots of activites. The teens are actually leaving in a week to go to the National Youth Gathering in Florida. They will have a ball! But they get together weekly and do lots of things together. For your 7 year old, we have a Children's Church program during the school year called Caraway Street that is lots of fun for the kids and where they actualy get something out of Church. During the summer months the Pastor does a sermon just for the kids! We also have VBS for the kids going right now on Wednesday nights from 6 - 8pm through August 15. Of course that is free.

As far as the services go, our Pastor focuses on teaching life application skills based on the Bible in his sermons versus preaching at you. Our 10:45am service is contemporary with a Praise and Worship music group vs Choir. It is very uplifting. Concordia is like a family and everyone is welcomed warmly!

I have the sme backgroung as you..have always went to an Assembly of God church. We started going to LakeRidge Bible Church in February last year and really love it. There are alot of seminary students that attend there so I have found the atmosphere is really alot more "Teaching" vs. "Preaching".
My son is only 6 but I know that the youth group is pretty large and I hear about their activities (which sound great) all the time. Coming up in the assemblies, we always went to smaller churches that didn't offer alot for kids and so this was very important for me when were looking for a new church. I wanted my son to have friends at church to grow up with and do activities with. The church is located on NW Hwy right off 30 (one street over from the Chevron gas station on the corner) Their website is www.lakeridgebiblechurch.org. Please feel free to contact me directly at ____@____.com if you have any more questions.

First Baptist Dallas is wonderful. It is located in downtown Dallas, but it offers so much. The have a youth program with so many members, and numerous activities. The church has several programs, and something for everyone. My family and I were amazed at how friendly the people are. Though it has roughly a 10,000 membership, it really has a warm and cozy feeling. Good luck.

Hey T.,

Not sure if you'd be interested, but... I know you said Garland but with George Bush, and 121 now, its really easy to get to our church. We're in Lewisville directly behind Vista Ridge Mall. Its very near both 121 and I-35 OR George Bush and I-35. It is Victorious Life, First Assembly of God. We are a teaching style church! He may get excited from time to time, and he may have a sermon here or there that is really preaching, but most the time (and this is why I like him) he's a teacher and speaks real world and on our level! We have a great youth group and our kids group is called Kings Kids, how great is that?

The nursery is also great but your kids are out of that range... We are a carasmatic church meaning we love our music and clap and its hard to sit still in there. But don't get me wrong either, you can feel comfortable in there no matter what you do to worship in your own way! We're a relatively small church. We just moved into this new church building so we're growing but its still a small church feel. I don't think we'll ever lose that part! :o)

Let me know if you'd like to check it out, I'll give you more info!

We love our Church but it is not in Garland! Very close to Garland and many people love it sooooo much they even come from Garland, Plano, Murphy, Frisco and Rowlett, etc. It is Fellowship Dallas Bible Church on Park Lane and 75. I think the website is fellowshipdallas.org Kids programs are great and adult programs too! Feel free to email me if I can answer any additional questions. Give it a try once and I think you would be surprised with all of the Garland people who attend our Church. Give it a try and I think you will be hooked! It happened to us-we were Episcopal and just went with some friends on a whim and knew this was what we were looking for with our 3 kiddos!

We go to First Baptist Church in downtown Garland and they have an excellent youth program. My daughter is only five and they have a ton of activities for her, but I also grew up in this church and as a teenager they had lots to offer. Right now the youth program is very large and very active. We just got a new youth minister and her is amazing! Their web-site is www.fbcg.org

If you don't want to go the baptist route, Firewheel bible church is also a great church. I'm not sure about their teen youth program because my friends that go there have young kids, but I've visited a couple of times and it seems like a great place. www.firewheelfellowship.com

Hope you find a place thats fits, I know how hard it is!

I am currently looking as well here in the Plano area. I grew up Pentecostal and would like something similar and spirit filled. I am currently attending a spirit filled church but it is too far away for my family. I am very interested. If I find anything as well I will let you know.

Hi T.!

We live in Garland, but we go to Trinity Bible Church in Richardson (www.trinitybiblechurch.com) and we have loved it there. I think our pastor has an excellent teaching style. His name is Jeff Miller and if you are interested in hearing any of his sermons before visiting, I know that they post some of them on bible.org (you can do a search for his name). Our church is medium-sized- big enough to provide excellent programs of various kinds, but not so big that you can't get to know people and feel connected. My son is young, so I only have firsthand experience with the nursery classes (which are great), but I have heard very good things about our youth pastor and I know they have a very active youth group. We would love for you to visit anytime.

Good luck with your search for a church home!
