Just a quick question! i'm starting to think Christmas decorations - although i'd never pull them out before Thanksgiving!
Wondering if anyone has a cute idea for a homemmade advent calendar. Something that would be easy to make, that i could put a little treat in for each day?
I saw an idea of hanging little tiny buckets along ribbon with the dates on them and hiding a pieces of candy in each bucket for the kids. Just wondering if anyone else has an even cuter idea! We usually just buy the advent calendars from the grocery store that are a box with punch out windows and a piece of chocolate for each day of december til Christmas. Looking for something more personal that i can use over and over.
Thanks :)

What can I do next?

They have a very cute advent calendar and includes instructions on how to put together. Simple and it looks like the kids rip the bottom paper off to find a treat. Good luck!

Well, this is something you have to make every year, but my son LOVES to do this! It's a Hershey's Kiss Advent Calender:

Hershey Kisses Advent Calendar

Help your kids count down the days until Christmas with this yummy homemade Advent calendar. Simply fold Hershey kisses (or any other festive chocolates) into plastic Saran wrap. Then tie each treat off with a piece of ribbon. You can even put notes inside each section, so that the Advent calendar includes 25 reasons why you love your kids, or 25 reasons why you're proud of them. In this way, the calendar serves two purposes - counting down to Christmas Day, and reinforcing to your kids how much you love and care about them!

I have a large quilted square (about 4 foot by 4 foot) it has 24 little pockets. orginally it had little gifts inside each pocket. we have long since changed the plan with it though. I make up little pcs of paper to go inside each one. the little bits of paper say things like

1- give your dad a hug for no reason
2 - make your sisters bed
3 - clear the table when its not your night
4 - take the teacher a cookie
etc.... little nice things to do for someone else. there are mixed in little things like a coupon for an ice cream cone a pc of candy etc. good luck

Oh, I made something similiar to what you are describing. Except I used kids Christmas themed socks (kind you wear on your feet) to hang instead of little buckets. I tacked up a long strip of ribbon across a big built in book shelf we have in our living room. I used mini clothespins you can find in the craft aisle to hang each sock. I found socks in the dollar bin at Target once they have Christmas stuff on the shelves. I think I also found some at the dollar store? The kids love it! The socks aren't huge, but big enough to fit in a small treat for each child (I have three). Actually, some socks don't have treats. Instead I put in a slip of paper with a fun activity for the day such as making cookies, watching a holiday movie, making hot chocolate, etc. If you want any ideas I think I still have the word document, just send me a PM.

I have one, it's made out of green material, and it has pockets for each day in December, I used to put the small candy canes in the pockets when my my kids were little, now i use it for my daycare kids, the hanger on it is a small rounded wood (you can get at Michales) and then some kind of string, embroidre thread works really good, if you want to have a picture on the top of the calendar and on the pockets get some Christmas material, and either sew in on, it's easier to use fabric glue (also at Michales). Hope this helps. J.

We got ours from Lillian Vernon over 15 years ago. It's a centerpiece that we put on our dining room table. It is a square box with 24 little doors - 6 doors on each side. A Christimas tree is on the top with places for ornaments. Each day, the girls open a door and get a new ornament for the tree. It's also a music box that plays, "Oh Christmas Tree." My girls love it. I just checked their website and they don't carry it anymore, but I did find this:

Which is the same idea, only it hangs on the wall.

Targer carries a really cute wooden one that is very "americana". It has little doors and you can put candy in each one. They were really reasonable and we bought two- one for our son and one for the next one!

We have one that reuse every year - a box of 24 doors that hold the wood ornamanets we hang on a small fake tree. The kids take turns every day and love it. I believe the box came from Lillian Vernon. On the alternative days I still use an advent calendar that we get from the store.
