Litter Box Disaster

I would really like some ideas on controlling the litter in my house. I have no basement and three cats. I have two litter boxes in my laundry room and it seems the litter gets tracked all over the house. I tried using one of those mats outside the boxes to stop it but it didn't stop it and seemed like it was a breeding ground for gross stuff. So, I have tile outside the box and I try to sweep it several times a day. However, it still seems the litter gets everywhere. I use "Tidy Cats Small Spaces." I tried to switch to Pine litter thinking it wouldn't get tracked.... but even that got tracked outside my laundry room and one cat didn't like it enough that she peed on the floor next to the litter box! HELP! I am at my wits end! I have two of my own children in the house plus I babysit two other kids. I really need to get this under control. Suggestions would be VERY appreciated. Thanks!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I decided to start with Cristina's advice to use the crystal litter from PetSmart. I just put it in this morning and my picky cat jumped right in and used it!!! I was shocked! So far there has only been a couple pieces outside the litter box but they have stayed in the laundry room. Also, my stick vac was able to pick up the pieces... another plus! Thanks Cristina and everyone else too!

We use Scoop Away and it seems to only track in the laundry room where the litter box actually is. I never have a prob with it in the rest of the house!

Hi,

We just started using Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract (available at Petsmart or online) and we really like it. So do the cats! We'd had litter box issues so we tried this because it has a 100% satisfaction guarantee. It doesn't seem to track as much and it's dust-free. It has chlorophyl to control odors, too.

Good luck!

Hi, C.!
I saw your post on Tuesday and I was anxiously awaiting to see what kind of responses you would get.
I too have my litter box in the laundry room and I am constantly dealing with the "tracking" issue.
I have been using the "crystal" litter from PetSmart for a couple of years now. It does seem to be better than the traditional litter (for tracking and odor issues.) Although, there are still some crystals that make their way out of the box. Please be sure to point them out to your little ones and emphasize that they're "yuck" (or whatever term you use). My little ones were very interested in the crystals when they started noticing them around!
Good luck,
A.

Hi C.,
We also tried those mats that are supposed to catch all the litter on their feet and it didn't help. Finally we went to home depot and bought one of those cheap green fake grass like doorway mats and of all the things we've tried that has worked the best.

good luck!

We keep ours in our spare bathtub. Most of the litter stays in the tub, and I just really sanitize it on a regular basis. Bits of litter make it onto the bathroom floor, though, so I'm curious to try some of the litters mentioned here!

I use regular Tidy Cat from Sam's. I also put a small kitchen rug next to the cat litter box and it helps with some of the tracking of the litter. Also you can trim your cats claws if they are inside cats which may help some. If you have never trimed your cats claws you may want to have a vet show you how.

Love the grass mat idea...i think that would work great but it has to be BIG and make sure the cats can't step around the mat but that they have to step on it!

I hear you...we have 3 indoor cats and the litter is everywhere!

I have a basement now, but lived in the city without one for many years so I feel your pain.
I finally found a litter that seems to work. I buy it at PetSmart and it is a "crystal" litter in a big clear plastic jug with a green lid. Sorry I can't remember the exact name...but be sure to get the one with the green lid. Also be sure to get the one at Petsmart, the other stores have similar ones but they are MUCH more expensive. It is rough shaped so it does not roll around, the others are little pearls and they roll around if they end up outside the box.
It is made out of silica so it absorbs ALL of the liquid, so the box does not smell bad at all. The larger pieces of litter also do not seem to track. It is super easy to scoop the poop, and changing the box is really easy because it is completely dry.
I just scoop the poop daily and stir the rest of the box up.
My 2 cats are old and pretty set in their ways, but neither ever had any objections to using the new litter. I've been using it for 3 years with no "accidents" outside the box.
Good luck to you

We switched from the Tidy Cats to Arm and Hammer - it controls the odor better and clumps better, IMHO. It doesn't help with the tracking issue, though. One thing that may help is to get those covered litter boxes - that way you at least control the entry/exit location on the box, so you should only get tracking in a small location.
