Lighter/Blonde Hair and Salon Question

So, I got my hair dyed lighter (blonde) over the Summer. At that time, I also got a cut/style, so when the price was over $100 + Tip etc., I didn't think much of it. Quite honestly, it looked a bit brassy so I had to buy a shampoo to help with that. I didn't call back my stylist or make her redo anything.

I called the salon this week to make an appointment to touch up the roots and was flabbergasted at the cost. The Receptionist said for the roots/partial dye, it will be $90. Is this an average cost?

The last few years, I've been box dying darker (about a shade darker than my roots). I've had a lot of compliments since I went lighter and for me personally, it makes me look younger.

Do any of you that have blonde/lighter hair who have darker roots have any tips for me to lighten it myself? OR products I can use. Any advice from individuals who are Cosmetologists/Stylists would be appreciated as well. I may be totally out of touch on what the upkeep is going to cost me.

What can I do next?

Have you considered calling a cosmetology school?

Just did a quick google search and found this one on West Jordan.

I would call them and find out their costs and make an appointment.

I do my own hair and I also have a friend who does hair help me sometimes so I don't have a lot of trouble.

Good luck!

This is why I stopped dying my hair after just less than a year. I couldn't take it. Professional was outrageously expensive. Box was okay, but had to be redone every 6 weeks or my hair would turn a ridiculous orange color. I wish I had never started. Two years later, I'm still growing the orange out, but the next cut will get it all off. I learned to embrace the grays, and I tell everyone it's my silver hair jewelry, a present from my children.

Never again!

There are many brands to choose from at Walmart for around $10 or less. Sometimes it's a try it and see what happens thing because it's just not quite the right color or you don't leave it on long enough or something.

Doing your own hair isn't hard. It's very very very simple. Pick a color that you like then try it out. If it's too yellow or too ash or too dark or too light then you adjust it a bit the next time you buy the color.

I have frosted my hair many many times. I have dyed it too. Not for years though but if "I" wanted my hair a different color I guarantee I'd be going to Walmart to pick up a box of what ever I wanted to use and I'd do it myself.

Yellow is not something I want. So I always pick an ASH color like dark ash blonde or Light ash brown. It is a greyish undertone instead of red or gold.

I like a white blonde instead of an orange blonde. I like a brown with no red in it. It depends on what YOU like when you look in the mirror.

Are you dying it or highlighting it? Your roots will show with either but will be much more noticeable sooner if you dye it all one color vs. highlighting it. With highlights, you can stretch out your touch up appts. a bit more. Highlights also tend to look more natural, especially if you request the stylist to do them subtle- they will lighten over time from the sun and hair dryer.

My salon charges the same price whether or not I get a cut with the highlight, so I always get a cut. I go every 10 weeks. I have tried a few times to do it myself with terrible results, I have a bit of red in my hair so I end up really brassy rather than blond. I have to go to a pro. Never feel bad about going back within a week if you're not happy, especially if you had to buy a shampoo to tone it. Especially considering the cost. I had my hair cut last week and hated it so I went back, she was happy to fix it free of charge.

I go to a small salon and it's $72 for cut/color (roots or one color), and $98 if there is something labor-intensive like foils (plus tip). I get foils every 2nd or 3rd trip.

If you're not happy with a color job, you should tell them within in a week - moot point now.

A lot of people I know do the work themselves, at least the in-between appointments to stretch out the salon visits. Nice & Easy makes a root touch-up product that's pretty good, I think and it's about $7. You need help to do the back of your head especially if you put your hair up in a ponytail but it's not hard. Most of my friends do it for each other or have their husbands do it. The kit comes with a little brush but I think it's helpful if you have a rat-tail comb too, to lift the sections and have a straight part each time. You definitely need an old towel for your shoulders. My husband did it a couple of times for me and it's not hard.

I have light brown hair naturally. I have been bleaching it for years though. Sometimes I do go darker, but the last 2 times I decided to go blonde again. I usually pay for a trim and 2 colors of highlights about $120 not including tip. The last time I tried to bleach my own hair was a week before my wedding 12 years ago. It ended up turning green! I freaked out and I had to pay about $150 for color correction at the salon. My advice is to never bleach your hair yourself. Going darker is so much easier to do your self, but never when going blonder.

eSalon is your best friend.
I've used it for years and will never go back to a salon for color, honestly.

$20 every 6 weeks is a lot more palatable than $100 (which, yes, that's what touch ups cost at mine, too).

Have you checked out Elon Salon? Google them. Basically its box dye ordered online but you take a picture of your hair color and send it in for a colorist to help you with the color and all delivered to your front door for around 20 bucks! The only reason I couldn't do it is because my hair is naturally dark brown and when I submitted the color I wanted to go too-it was too light! darn....but check it out it might work for ya! Also go to Sally's Beauty Supply most of the time the people that work there have some salon experience and can help you. I did when I wanted to put some blonde highlights in my girls hair and the guy that worked there helped me extensively. If I can do it-anyone can-lol! Turned out great. For my specific hair though when I wanted to go lighter I had to go to the salon. It's a supercuts (lower end salon by some) however the gal I found there -OMG so glad I found her! I have naturally curly hair and it's very hard to find a stylist that knows how to color, cut, and style it! I don't think they were that expensive though and I would never pay that much for a retouch-no way!
