Light Pink Areas on Breasts--almost like Sunburn

I am 24 weeks right now (2nd tri), and for the past month and a half, I have had pink areas on my breasts (right one has a larger area than left one). They haven't changed since I got them, and they don't hurt, they're not swollen, they're just pink--kind of like a sunburn. (also have pink little veins which I know are normal). Two OB/GYN's at the office don't seem conerned, told me to get a better fitting bra (didn't make them go away) and gave me some anti-fungal cream, but that didn't help either. However, they haven't gotten larger in the few months either. Anybody else experiencing these pink areas?

What can I do next?

It could be just irritation. It could be an infection. It could be the changes your body is undergoing during pregnancy.

It could also be inflammatory breast cancer. Unfortunately not many doctors are even aware of this type of breast cancer. There may never be a lump with this type of breast cancer. It does cause redness or pinkness that may look like an infection.

Information is available on the Susan G. Komen site:
http://cms.komen.org/Komen/AboutBreastCancer/Resources/Ed...

I would go back to the doctors and tell them it isn't getting better, you've tried what they requested and you want to know why it isn't getting better.

I actually have something very similar. It is only on one side and is kind of where an underwire would sit on a bra as it moves towards the center of the breastbone. I've had this for at least 4 years. When I first discovered it, my doc presecribed an anti-fungal cream, which really didn't do anything. I have found that if I apply a rich moisturizer, it tends to go away. If I stop using the moisturizer, it comes back. I think it is just extra sensitive skin that becomes irritated by my bra, especially if I am sweating at all. Like you, it hasn't gotten any bigger, it doesn't hurt and neither my GP nor my OB/GYN are concerned about it. I think it is just a weird skin thing.

K.,

is the pinking on your nipples? I hate to be forward, but well.. don't know how else to ask :)

I would go through several changes in my nipples during my pregnancies - they would get really dark, and then sometimes they looked a bit sunburned. I'm not 100% sure what the cause was, but they returned to normal after baby was born - took a month or two, but it went away.

If its not rough or anything, just pink looking... i get that every day in different areas of my belly and I'm on my 38th week and have for a few months. Just odd thing. I figured it had something to do w/blood flow. Got it w/my first too.

I don't want to alarm you, but it wouldn't hurt to research IBC(Inflammatory breast cancer) I just learn about it.

I agree with the previous advice about reading about the IBC and asking your doctor about it. I actually just yesterday finished a book where the character had this, I had never heard of this type of breast cancer until I read the book. Just to be sure, I would read up on it, and call your doctor. It COULD be something related to pregnancy, but you need to have a postitve diagnosis.

Sounds like a fungus. I've had it and it gets bad in warm weather or when you sweat. Being prego, you might be warmer and sweating more. You said the cream didn't work though-huh. I don't know how long you used it, sometimes it takes awhile for it to work. The bottom line is, if 2 dr.'s don't seem concerned, I wouldn't worry. Your body does some weird stuff while pregnant!!!

If you are a fairer skinned person it may just be rosy from increased blood flow. As long as they don't hurt, swell, feel warm to the touch, or have knots or bumps underneath I wouldn't worry too much about them. A reddened area of the breast can be a sign of mastitis or breast infection, but at this point it is unlikely, particularly if you are not having pain or flu-like symptoms. Perhaps visit a La Leche League meeting and ask them (particularly if you are considering breastfeeding). There's not much those ladies don't know about boobies:) Good luck.

There is a very rare form of breast cancer that looks like a red or pink area on the breast. Does the area feel hot or itch. My sister-in-law's mother had this cancer. It is rare and often misdiagnosed.

Google rare breast cancer and see if you can find reference to it. Other than that it might just be a yeast infection. I know you aren't nursing yet but a yeast infection can cause red or pink areas on your breast. Are you leaking? The moisture in your bra could be causing a yeast infection. Are you sweating a lot?

Did a little internet surfing and see what you can find.

there is a breast cancer out there that start s like this and is new. You should keep asking drs or look on the internet for the name of this cancer. I got an eamail a year or two ago about this saying it is rare and not many drs know and to be proactive on our own. So pleae keep asking and researching.
