Leg Pains in 2 Year Old ???

My 2.5 year old daughter complains of leg pains all the time. She says the pain comes from the area just above the back of her knee (lower hamstring area). It doesn't seem to be a cramp or at least it doesn't feel tight when I touch it. I asked the Dr last time we were in and she said her legs were proportional and looked normal so it was likely just growing pains. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions on relieving the pain? There is no set time of day or amount of activity that seems to trigger the pains...very sporatic. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

All the suggestions you had were great, esp. Ibuprofen and heat. "Growing pains" can be very painful for little ones. As the one mom suggested below, really try to increase the potassium but also you can do a mild increase in her calcium level. Sometimes lack of calcium or just not enough can cause leg cramps. Hope this helps. Good luck!

My toddler gets them too- exact same place and for no reason it seems, and always always in the middle of the night. Here is the the link to Mayo Clinic info on growing pains. Must just be part of growing up for some kids.

R. L.,

Hello. If you go to a Licensed Massage Therapist, she/he should be able to assist your daughter with the pains in her legs. If the therapist is nice enough she/he might even show you yourself how to massage your daughter's legs, to save you $$$. A professional Licensed Massage Therapist is required to have you there watching anyway because she's under the age of 18, so be aware of that also R..

I hope all goes well. Thank you.

My 4 year old daughter has the same thing, so I took her to the doctor. I thought it was growing pains also, but wanted to be sure. She told me it was not necessarily growing pains but from all of the jumping around my little one does - she jumps and dances a lot. She said it is quite common, and said ibuprofen and heat are the best thing for it. Good luck, have a wonderful holiday season.

My son has the same pains, and they seem to be growing pains. He LOVES to have the heat pad on them for a while. It really helps.

Also, Hyland's (maker of the Teething Tablets) also sells leg pain tablets. I don't know the ages, but they can be found at health food stores.

try giving her bananas, which has potassium. Those are good for leg cramps that recur.

My son had those, but it was growing pains.....I'd simply use the ibu., heat, and I'd rub the achy area. The bananas helped the episodes from happening as often.

My 3 yr old has had some of that the last few months. She says her knees hurt and kinda sits for a minute then goes back to playing or doing whatever she was doing. She even woke up crying and I mean really crying not just wimpering or whining, one night complaining her knees hurt. I did attribute it to growing pains. I remember my knees hurting when I was in school sometimes. I gave her motrin and massaged her knee area some. That is about the most I know to do. Maybe soak them in a warm bath too. Hope that helps.
