I have a great Brother sewing machine that has been collecting dust for many years. I do not know how to sew and am really interested in learning. Any books that you recommend that would help me get started?

I would definitely take the easy sewing classes at Joann's, I took the bag class, and I am hooked on sewing!!! Then join Pinterest!! I have been sewing for about a year now, and I am making tons of things!
Get this book by Diana Rupp, "Sew Everything Workshop." It's fantastic! If you follow her projects, you will know the basics of sewing by the end.

Another resource I love is www.threadbanger.com. They have video tutorials that are very clear, concise and well done on all the basics from hems to zippers. You can also find archived lessons on www.youtube.com. Just type in threadbanger in the search window.
You can also check out Youtube.com. They have a lot of people posting videos on how to sew. Good luck!
I don't know about books, but the last time I was at JoAnn Crafts, I saw that they have classes there. That might be the easiest way to learn. The flyers they had there showed different projects you could choose (whether you are interested in quilting, making clothes, etc).
I agree you should start on YouTube. If you find you need more hands on approach - the fabric stores typically offer classes or you can ask the ladies there for one-on-one recommendations for teachers:)
If you really wanted a book, I'd go with the "for dummies" series. A great first step.

Try this site. It has a lot of tutorials with lots of pictures. From the basic to more advanced. And all free. Enjoy! Don't be afraid of the machine. You can do it.

Check out a continuing education school or Technical college or Sewing and fabric store. Any or all of them may offer sewing classes.
It's better to learn from an experienced seamstress then from a book.
I was a home ec teacher. I highly recommend taking a class first. You'll need to know about your machine and how to use it as well as how to sew a project.
All fabric stores offer classes at very reasonable prices.
