Hi Mamas!

We'd like to find tutoring help for our 6-year-old daughter, but am at a loss as to where to start. We have heard about the "learning centers" like Score, Sylvan and Kumon -- has anyone tried these and if so were you satisfied with your experience? Are they all the same? Are they worth the money? Thanks so much for any guidance you can give us!

A.

Hi A.,

I had compared all these learning centres and finally found one which I liked..as they believe in a lot of practice and the cost is very reasonable. Log on to www.sunraychineseschool.com

I am very happy with it and so is my 6 year old daughter.

I tutor for Tutors 2 Go. We actually go to the child's home at the time arranged with the tutor and family. I am not currently taking new students so you may want to contact them for a tutor. It is family owned and operated---they care for their students.

I've visited those places and they are pretty much the same. Whether or not they are right for your daughter depends on her. My brother went to Sylvan for math when he was in middle school and it helped him. However, I took my son to Score and was NOT impressed at ALL! I have several friends who are private tutors and they too say that the various centers are not that great.

You might look into Creative Tutors, Special Effects Learning Links, and flip to the back of the Dallas Child Magazine for other private tutoring agencies.

Good luck!

We tried score and I wasn't impressed. I would think about a private tutor. With the rates the centers charge, you may find a college student who can do a better job, one on one attention, at a lower price. Try www.craigslist.com

I was also going to say to stay away from the corporate tutoring - look for a small place. Also - there is a link somewhere through TCU where you can place a free ad for employment - they have education majors there, you might find a college student that could come to your home or meet at the library close by. I'm sorry I can't remember it, but I think you go to TCU's website and there is a link for employment and then you go from there - hire a frog, or something like that. Good luck!

I have heard good things about Sylvan, but it's outrageously expensive. I would check with the school that your daughter is going to and ask them if they have tutors. I'm sure they could recommend someone (a retired teacher, or one that's staying home with their baby...) that would be much cheaper. I taught for 4 years and have now decided to stay home with my daughter and my principal said she would send parents my way.

Good luck!

Not Score. We tried it for a year and it really didn't do anything at all. My friend uses Kumon and loves it and has seen a big improvement. Score sounded good, because of the computer interaction, but there was little HUMAN interaction. So your child could be totally guessing on the computer (which mine was) and not even reading the lessons.

Hi A.,

My name is R. and I live in Terrell. I too am having trouble finding help for my son who is 5. Please let me know what you learn. On an off note, do you have any babysitter recommendations? My husband and I usually use a teenage girl who plays with my son alot but she has discovered cheerleading, volleyball,... I would like someone who would engage my son not just talk on the phone.
