I think my windows are leaking, but I don't know what kind of repair person to have to come look at them? The wood around the windows on the outside has the paint peeling off, and the trim on the inside trim is also peeling off. I believe the wood is repeatedly getting wet and then drying, causing the peeling paint. I have had a painter over to look at it, he gave me a quote to scrape the exterior and caulk all around the windows, replace the water damaged board, and repaint. Do you think a painter would be the right person for this? I mean, what if just caulk isn't adequate enough and I need to have the windows replaced, I would hate to spend the money on a repair that is not going to fix the problem? Any suggestions?
My husband is a painter and his dad is a trim carpenter, they said you should call a trim carpenter. A trim guy is the one who will replace all the trim around the windows since it is rotten. Then you will need to paint and caulk it yourself or have a painter come do it for you. I have also seen ads for just a "handy man" who does all sorts of stuff, maybe you could call him and he can do it all for you? I hope this helps you.
If you are not worried about the paint or stains for now then I would go ahead and caulk it yourself I'm sure it would save a butload of money.I started reading it and the first thing that came to mind was caulk would probably fix it but then I read you were asking that in specific,I say go for it.The estimate would probably stay the same even if you wait awhile.My husbands a maintenance man and thats what he did when our windows leaked:)You will eventually want to get it fixed by some pro but you might as well take the time to save the money up.Hope this helps and good luck:)

Try asking for a free quote from a carpenter and from a company that does windows as well. Between the three you should get a better idea of what needs to be done, what will best meet your needs and what the least expensive course of action will be.
The best thing to do might be to get your windows replaced. I got some quotes about 6 months ago, and it was cheaper than I thought it would be. Of course, the prices did vary from company to company, so you would want to get at least 3 quotes. Just to give you an idea, it would be about $2500.00 for me to get 6 windows replaced.
Keep in mind that moister around the windows can lead to bigger problems. First, it could cause damage to the wood beyond the window area. That could lead to a bigger repair job. Also, damp wood attracts termites.
If you don't have the money to spend right now, then caulk and paint will get you by for a while. (That is what we are doing until we are ready to spend the $$$ for new windows.) I wonder about replacing wood at this time. It does seem like a waist to go through all that trouble without getting new windows.
Water is probably getting in around the window frames (where they meet with the house). Sealing them with caulk and paint should keep the water out. Of course, if the painter wants to replace just the window trim, then that could be helpful and pretty cheap.
It won't hurt to get some quotes and compare prices. Just keep in mind that the people who come to your house to give you quotes are sales people. Don't let them pressure you into spending too much.
The painter should be fine to replace simple widow trim. But, how nice are your windows? Are they worth saving? Can you afford new windows, and maybe other repairs to your house from water damage? Have I caused you more trouble than help?
In short, some new trim, caulk, and paint should keep the water from coming in around the frame of your windows. If your windows are otherwise nice, then they are worth saving. If they aren't, then you might want to see what it would cost to get new windows compared to the repairs. Good luck.
I would contact a general contracter type person and see what they say. OR get in touch with companies that replace windows and see what they say, maybe even get new windows if that's the case... All that leaking and water damage could cause more things in the future such as mold, rotting wood etc.... Good Luck!
A painter may be able to help you but you also should look at a Handy Man. We had a Handyman do ours and he did a great job. I'm happy to provide the name if you're interest.
you can do the caulking etc but it will only cover up a problem.. i had my windows replaced with window world (best thing i ever did to my home) i replaced 4 windows and cost around 1100...the wetness is probably comeing from single pane windows sweating and the damaged board is exposure from elements... when they did my windows they put a vinyl trim all around the outside.. yeah no more scraping... but i am no expert but i dont think you will regret new windows
